Shapiro made a good point when someone asked him this question once about the persons SO.
Essentially it came down to the fact that they are a Lefty for one or two reasons.
1) They got sucked in by MSM and social media and all their loser lefties friends.
2) it is who they are in their values.
1 you may can fix with good research and evidence and conversations. 2. Dont waste your time. Person is sick in the head.

The modern leftist is quick to make excuses for laziness, jealousy, and whataboutisms.
Anyone of that mindset is going to deflect truth, because it reveals the flaws in their reasoning.
The best you can do is protect the truth by not allowing them to command the language. This is the ultimate weapon/tactic of the left. To twist the meaning of words to suit their needs. There is only one truth. Do not let them claim, "their truths."

It depends on what you are trying to convert them to. I suggest all people read Matthew Yglesias and Kevin Williamson for a start. These are center-left and center-right intellectuals who are top-notch. If you want to get the nutty-left and nutty-right viewpoints, just watch CNN and FoxNews.

In my many encounters with leftist friends and coworkers the key item is economics. They don't understand it at all. The book that explains it best in simple terms is Free to Choose by Milton Friedman.
