Southern Baptist Convention under investigation for covering up widespread abuse

Leaders of the largest Protestant denomination in the US say the authorities have started an inquiry into sexual abuse by its clergy.
Lawyers for the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) said they would co-operate with the investigation "fully and completely".
A report in May said the SBC had covered up the abuse and vilified survivors.
The SBC has 13 million members and is heavily concentrated in the US south.
The department of justice has sent subpoenas to the Church's executive committee, its lawyers said.
SBC leaders said the investigation centred on widespread sexual abuse problems highlighted by May's report - a result of an investigation carried out for the SBC by an outside firm.
"Individually and collectively each SBC entity is resolved to fully and completely cooperate with the investigation," they said in a statement.
"While we continue to grieve and lament past mistakes related to sexual abuse, current leaders across the SBC have demonstrated a firm conviction to address those issues of the past and are implementing measures to ensure they are never repeated in the future."
The SBC's own investigation was launched in the wake of 2019 report by the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News that exposed hundreds of alleged cases of sex abuse within the church.
The 288-page report named a few senior leaders on the Church's executive committee who had control over its response to the reports of abuse and were "singularly focused on avoiding liability for the SBC".

As they should, but the DOJ shouldn’t be involved

Who are the real groomers in this country?

If only they would let these preachers marry all this wouldn’t happen.

When does the DOJ plan on investigating the Catholics and those pedos on Epsteins list?

It was so covered up that most of the cases in the report were already public knowledge. And The two high profile cases featured in detail were mutual immoral relationships between adults.

As soon as they wrap up Hunter Biden’s laptop investigation

Anybody with power or authority over others is in a position to do this. Pastors, Teachers, Politicians, Bosses, etc. Most have morals and don’t use it in terrible ways.

There is already an open DOJ investigation regarding former Cardinal McCarrick. Supposedly they are considering a RICO violation.

I don't see the cover up.
Nope. Never was one. This entire thing is because the leadership of the convention gave a platform to lies and slander in an effort to keep power over the convention in an attempt to move it further to the left. I'm sure they haven't learned anything from this experience, but they should.

Coverup for abuse is terrible. All those responsible should resign their positions of authority in the church if they are still there.

There was and is no coverup.

I'm no fan of the woke retarded direction the SBC took over the last decade plus...
but this was the opposite of a coverup - they were pretty open and transparent about what happened at the end of the day.

All those crying coverup must not have even bothered to read the report. There is no widespread abuse. There was no vast coverup. Moreover, the SBC can’t even coverup abuse at churches. It has zero authority over churches.

This is just an excuse for the federal government to start tightening the noose around Trump's base.
