….the norm these days? My wife and I don’t, but we are almost 50, so we aren’t young and hip.

39 and we’ve been having joint account since we got married 10 years ago.
My parents have joint accounts, my in laws did not.

I can't speak for every financial institution but ours incentivizes individual accounts so we have them.

I asked the question. Are bills determined by the salary and some percentage, or do they make the same amount?

Don’t think it’s the norm.

So how are bill amounts calculated?
Posted on 8/6/22 at 11:14 am to auwaterfowler
I automatically assume that any husband and wife who have different accounts will end up divorced.

How's that make any difference? Whether bills get paid out of one account, versus two accounts, doesn't change the cash flow.

We do, and have for years. I'm 50, she's 49. Been married 25 years and have had separate accounts for the last 20. We tried one account, but it didn't work for us as well as separate accounts have. Whatever works...

It's not complicated. Unless their salaries are identical, someone is getting screwed unless they assign a percentage of weight to the bills, based on how much each person makes. So yeah, it does matter.

I suppose most couples have separate accounts. My wife and i do but each of us are also on the others account

Probably depends on the couple's preferences. And likely what their bill situation looked like before the marriage. I could see folks who got married later on who kept their individual accounts.
I've known some that have one joint account and then their own separate accounts. All of the big bills come out of the joint account and the smaller accounts are used for personal spending.
We don't have a joint account at this point (not married yet) but he has access to mine and I have access to his.

That's retarded. Bills are for consumption. Your income shouldn't matter.

Probably did make a difference back then when you had to balance your own check book. With instant access to the information and no need to calculate the balance, you'd probably be fine with a joint account now.
We have multiple joint accounts and use them for different purposes.

I find it very strange for married couples having 2 checking accounts that are individual.
I know a few people that do and it is just weird when we are out and they try to figure what account to pay for something. Separate checking, credit cards, etc.

Had assets first
Seperate accounts are necessary
Joint account for paying for everything "we" do

How is it strange to you?

Two separate checking accounts. Some joint savings and investment accounts. Small freedoms avoid a lot of ticket tack arguments.

Husband - $25,000/year
Wife - $50,000/year
House Note - $2,000/month
In your world, both owe $1,000?
So husband has so much less play money than the wife, even though they're married? Yeah, no chance for resentment there at all.
