When did Fredericksburg get so expensive?

With flight accommodations and rental car you can go to Sonoma for the same price. I am kinda floored. The rental cars in particular were totally outrageous as opposed to rental cars elsewhere.

Yes. My wife and I were looking for a few day get away and were thinking of the direct flight to Austin. We were just stunned. Never been to Fredericksburg and we have been looking for a wine trip for awhile.
We priced out Sonoma/Napa and it came out almost exactly the same with more expensive flights. Couldn't believe it.
Obviously you waste an extra 5 hours each way traveling and prices for gas, restaurants and drinks are going to be much more in CA, but for the basics it came out completely similar.

its insane. i dont have a great answer for you. there is a new short term rental ordinance but, the prices were much higher long before that. i go out there from time to time and it seems like stuff is a little less expensive than last summer fwiw.
all i can really rationalize is that it hasnt seen a huge growth in accommodations and the populations of austin/san antonio area have exploded.

outside of airbnb's:
i like the airport hotel. it is $200/night or so and a lot cleaner than some of the other roach motels. not really close to town though. closer to the horse track and OTB
fredericksburg inn and suites is the best for location motel but that used to be $130/night pre covid and is now $300+.
the peach tree inn isnt terrible. location and ok room. can walk into town.
will be interested to see how the recession plays out for them. overall it was busier last year just from my general feel.

What time of year were you looking at? Is there a festival or something else going on in Austin at that time?

That's partially the problem and fully acknowledge that. Thanksgiving time.
But other "wine" areas that are generally considered much more established are of a similar price. Its kinda jarring.

one the weekends the super 8 is $200+ a night. there is no reason that shithole hotel should be that.

The flights to Austin are dirt cheap.
Its the accommodations and car rental that are expensive. The car rental in particular seems very high.

You could look at staying in Hye which is an easy 15 minutes to Fred, although I'm not sure if it has hotels. Johnson City is about 30 minutes away but only about 20 minutes from a lot of the wineries. Comfort is about 25-30 minutes and I like better than Fred. Kerrville is 30 minutes and has a nice little downtown. Also, I have a family connection on a ranch near Old Tunnel State Park, about a 30 minute drive to Fred but most of it is on a small back road. They have an airbnb that is available at Thanksgiving and the ranch is really cool. LINK

Have better luck sometimes calling the rental agency I'm looking to book with...just a heads up to possibly try.
If wanting to maybe look outside the box some, check into Paso Robles, CA
Quieter version of Napa area... very nice, not sure what the temps/weather is in November....but def rec.
We also stumbled upon some vineyards north of ATL in North GA that are really nice... Always said we would love to go back with some couples and get a cabin and hit all of the diff vineyards in that area.
I would say all of these other options would be similar to Frederiksburg in a way...
Not sure of time table either but could fly/rent from Dallas/FT Worth and drive down through Waco etc... She may enjoy that.

Try turo for car rental. I used it last weekend. Usaa insurance covers it. Not sure about others.

I live about 45 minutes in a similar town called Boerne. Fredericksburg has become a tourist trap. Is very expensive now. You could have a similar if not better experience staying here in Boerne and driving up there( stunning drive ). Also, from Boerne, New Braunfels is only about 45 minutes which offers a lot to see and do as well.
Fly into SA, rent a car and come stay in Boerne for the weekend.

Agreed, and I like Boerne too. When we stay out there we rarely go into Fredericksburg.

Agreed! We usually stay at an Airbnb outside of Fredericksburg. I've stayed near Hye and near Comfort. Boerne is great, but a little too far from the wineries for my taste. We do breakfast at the Airbnb and sometimes eat out or sometimes cook. When I say outside of these towns, it's out in the country, like farmland. Beautiful and quiet. You really see the that the "stars at night are big and bright."
Go into town and shop for an afternoon. Schedule your wine tastings. I like the ones that are out of town anyway.

With the invasion of Austin from CA and everywhere else, the locals are moving out west to Marble Falls/Fred/Johnson City/Blanco/Dripping Springs, etc. The imports all want to go check out the hill country too.
Everything is more expensive than it was a few years ago and it's more than just the inflation like everywhere else. Lots of new demand in the hill country.

What about car rentals from the SA airport compared to the Austin airport?
Last fall we did a long weekend in SA. Stayed at the Drury Plaza hotel - very nice. We did a day trip to Fred. Much more crowded than had been even the last time before we went which was like 4 years before.
