LSU 2 games away from being the preeminent college football program of the century

It's a game of inches. The "close game" thread got me thinking how close LSU was to being where Alabama is right now. Both games occurred in 2012.
Game 1: Take your pick...the NC rematch with Bama obviously, but that game wasn't close because Les made no adjustments and came totally unprepared to do again what they had already done on Bama's home field...or Oklahoma State missing a 37 yard field goal and losing to IA St which allowed for the rematch.
Game 2: 2012 vs Alabama in TS...I don't have to remind you what happened in the closing seconds.
Those 2 games flipped the fortunes of the 2 programs. In a vaccuum, LSU would have 5 NCs since 2000 to Bama's 4 but Les may have even parlayed that success into better recruiting and more titles. Those 2 losses set a chain of events into motion wherein Saban became the goat and was able to get almost any player he wanted from all over the US, including Louisiana.
I'm not trying to drag up bad memories or ruin anyones's day, just thought it was interesting how close LSU really was to being THE football program of this century and having one of the best runs off all-time.

I'm so tired of hearing about Bama. I can't wait until NS is gone and we can cement ourselves as the best SEC West team

Nah, we would certainly have won an NC in there, but Saban had Bama in an upward trajectory. Those two games you mentioned consisted of the best defense we have ever had and a fluke find of a QB in Mettenberger. Remember, Miles never recruited or grew a decent QB.
Miles wasn't going to sustain any kind of serious momentum against Alabama. Of course, the other years, we lost inexplicably to teams we had no business losing to.

I agree with you. That Okla State loss screwed everything up. That 2012 Bama game was one of my all time favorite games until the last minute. Band was blasting Neck and we had them on the ropes. Bama fans were insufferable after that. I have PTSD from their fans shaking pom poms in my face walking out of Tiger Stadium that night

Agree about the 2012 game
We went in with one loss and a win would've meant we were back in the SECCG. Hard to believe they would've gotten into the national title game again without going to the SECCG.
Crazy atmosphere especially after the fullback took the pass in the flat like 75 yards. Les couldn't throw on 3rd down with a HOT HOT HOT QB. Could've run out the clock.
That also would've meant wins against them in 2007, 2010, 2011, and 2012... three in a row regular season with the 2011 divot. Big gap from that point forward.

Is this where we pretend that we didn't almost beat Bama was Anthony Jennings as QB? A NC in 2012 could have kept Les right even with Saban, which is a crazy thought given what actually happened.

I don't see LSU winning the 2019 title if Les wins back to back titles in 2011 and 2012
Would have dramatically changed the way things played out post 2012
But really no way of knowing how things would have played out

This should never have happened... there should have been common sense applied that would have said a bad day does not undo the whole season body of work. Both teams played in their respective championship games or were conference champs, AL should never have been considered for the #2 slot and a re-match. Of course, it's not AL's fault; they took the opportunity and won fair and square.

We got our arse kicked. If we were the premier college program we wouldn't have gotten embarrassed. OKSt loosing doesn't change the fact that we could not handle our business.

We blew this game, at home, in the last 2 minutes. Even if we win, there are no guarantees that we go into Atlanta and beat UGA. In fact, UGA was one silly play away from beating Bama and throttling ND themselves.
To your point, Bama was
:01 away from beating Clemson with the pick
:01 away from beating Auburn before the Kick Six
Beat UGA in OT on a wild 3rd and forever
Three plays changed national title(s)

Preimminent? Imminent means "about to happen". You are looking for preeminent.

We have already won 3 NCs this century. We’re only 22 years into it. There’s plenty of time to win more. Let’s see what the CBK era brings. I believe he will win at least 2 NCs. We may have a dynasty in the making and go on a run to win 3 NCs in 4-5 yrs.

Hey Oligo, I care less about ur opinion. I don’t give a rats arse about Saran or Bama.
LSU is fixing to take off with Coach Kelly leading the fighting tigers of LSU. Keep ur opinions to yourself and get off this posting site.

Think of this:
After the GOTC win, Les was 3-2 vs Saban.
Had he won those two games, he would have been 5-2 against him, which means that Saban would not have had a winning record against Les until at least 2016.
Big swing on those missed opportunities.
GEAUX TIGERS!

I don't know about that....A&M looks like they might be a legitimate threat to anyone in the SEC.....

Les Miles couldn’t develop QBs once offenses became more pass-focused. But impact on Saban if LSU won 2012 and 2014 would’ve been huge.
