He’s making $9.672 mil on the final year of his 4/44 contract he signed with the Cavs. I believe he’s going to vital to our success going forward provided he stays healthy but I don’t see how we can even pay him like his previous contract. Maybe 3 years $24 million? I think that’s a fair deal for a premium backup 5. If he was a guard or wing it would be more in the $10-12 million per range but if we can get him back for $8 mil a year I say lock him up. His energy was infectious like Josh Hart’s and Jose’s and he plays larger than his actual 6’7” height. This won’t happen this year of course without unloading Temple plus one of Kira, Graham or Jaxon but I don’t thing any of those 3 are on this team next year and most likely Hayes gets dealt during the year. I’ve been a Jax fan but the way he disappeared in the playoffs when the team really needed him to play well made me give up on him and I think EJ is going to take his place once he gets some seasoning under him.

I think he’s going to be looking for 10mil a year average. I’ll be surprised if it’s any less. You look at PJ Tuckers contract and it’s hard to see Nance asking for a lot less.

And he’s 37 years old. Nance is 29. So you’re right he’s going to command $10-12 million. I just don’t know if we can swing it with 2 max players plus CJ needing a new deal and then you have Herb coming up fast. They need to get off of Kira, Temple, Jaxon and Graham’s contracts and continue to use our war cheat of draft picks to replace them with solid cheap, young talent.

Well, we better.

This is the test of whether Gayle goes into the tax or not.

The Pelicans are legit title contenders if Zion and BI sniff 70 games played.
The Nance’s of the world are the kind
players that help teams win titles.

Nance, Trey and Jose will be the glue to the bench this year and will all play starters level minutes. The depth this team has accumulated should frighten other teams.

The key will be unloading Graham's contract. Based on the estimated cap for 23-24, we would be about $18 million under the tax line for 12 players without Graham (and assuming Temple and Hayes are not extended). We could possibly fit a Nance extension, our rookie and a league minimum player and stay under the tax. Kira would be about $5.7 million that year if we picked up his option, so that also could provide flexibility if he does not progress.

I don't understand the Nance love. He is a journeyman big with injury issues. He is fine for now, but I fully expect Liddell to take his spot and force him out by the end of the year. He's not getting 10M+ being a 4th or 5th big.

Larry Nance came in and contributed 4 weeks removed from a meniscus injury in a new system in must win games. He’s also a key leader for our younger guys. In a lot of ways, I think he’s a better leader and more of a positive influence than Josh Hart was and that’s not even shade on Josh Hart.

If you have ever listened to the guy speak for more than 5 seconds, you would probably understand his value to the team is more than just being an 8th man/spot starter.

Larry is actually going to be healthy this season, have reps in the system and have more on court chemistry with the team. If you let him play out this season, his price likely goes up, not down from what it is today.

I wouldn’t mind trying to extend him for at least 2 more seasons.

an extension of 2/20 seems fair
that would make his contract 3/30 starting this year. After that the team will need some flexibility

I’ve no doubt he would earn that if he stays healthy

You didn’t watch him in the playoffs If you can’t see Nance’s value.

He’s be worth every penny of $10 million a year. We paid Hart that and he’s better than Hart as much as love Josh.

So he got healthy and was excited to join a winning team then had some positive moments. I got it. I expect the coaches and the actual team leaders to direct the younger players.

Nance was a 20mpg guy on a team without Zion. Plus we have added Liddell and have Murphy ascending in a front court position. Also Hayes is bulking up.

Nance will be out of the rotation by Xmas and traded shortly thereafter. Giving him an extension of 10M+ to be our 4th or 5th big is dumb. Why would you want that kind of roadblock in front of our youth and taking minutes away?

Why extend backups multiple years into the future? He's not a upper level 6th man or defensive stopper. What would be the purpose of this?

Come on man. A rookie drafted in the 2nd round isnt going to take Nance, whos been a solid rotational big in the league for 6-7 years, out of the rotation. Thats just silly.

Nance played 17 games for us. He had one game (playin against the Clippers) that was really good. Then he had a bunch of solid performances. He never played over 30 minutes and only went over 25 minutes twice. I appreciate what he did but you shouldn't give out multi year extensions based on less than 20 games.

Zion is back. That's 34mpg coming from someone. It's either Murphy, Hayes or Nance getting the scraps. People want to pick Nance. I don't get it. I'm all for high effort vets. But not at 10M+ a year..

Nance will get an extension at 11-13 million a year. He’s more than a backup 5, he can play the 4 and he’s even played the 3 at times. He’s also a guy that can step in and start at the 4 if you need him to

IMO, in the 23-24 season we will only have 1 of Nance or Hayes. If they had to make the decision today, it's probably Nance, but luckily they don't.

I wouldn't be surprised if they hold off on an extension for Nance, and make the choice between the 2 next offseason.

For the 23-24 season:

Jonas
Zion
BI
Herb
CJ

Nance/Hayes
EJ
Trey
Daniels
Jose

Billy
Naji
Kira (maybe?)
First round draft pick

(assuming they move on from Graham at some point between now and the 23-24 season)

Would be possible to maybe squeak below the tax next offseason too.
