Even if he is 'only" making $500K-ish/yr in Sweden, the Swedes still probably put him up in a multi million $$ estate and pay for every nickel of his training expenses and needs.
They probably fund a high level therapy and nutritionist as well as training partners and coaches.... None of which would be funded in the US unless someone like Nike or Adidas put all that into their endorsement contract with him.
In Sweden, he his one of the most famous athletes in their nation. In the US, he probably would have gotten a Wheaties box and about 4 seconds in an Amex commercial that runs for 2 weeks every 4 years....and that's about it.
He would also have to hustle sponsors to get what he gets for free in Sweden.
Obviously he is a pretty rate example because he's so good, but the USOC has relied otoo heavily on college athletics and facilities for far too long to do train up their athletes.
If the university athletics system in America ever crumbled (which it seems it's not out the realm of possibility anymore) USA would barely have a team anymore in most Olympic sports.
Just look at how we do in sports that are major College sports in the US (women's volleyball, track, Swimming, basketball, wrestling, etc) and how we do in sports that the university system doesnt cater to (men's volleyball, ping pong, weightlifting, cycling, etc).
Sure, we can win some medals there, but we aren't anywhere near as dominant in areas that the American College systems don't support.

Scrolling through his instagram and he has sponsorships with Omega, Polestar, Redbull, and Puma.
I imagine he does better with sponsors being in Sweden.

Plus take 50% plus of his income in taxes to help fund a highly socialized government scheme, so he essentially becomes a government employee, working for peanuts

So $250k is peanuts? In the US, he would be making less, maybe $300k and paying about 30% in taxes. I wonder if he is a corporation in Sweden and so paying 20% rate and then paying himself peanuts to avoid high taxes on his salary?

Nah, but we’ll still claim him.

Fwiw, there are a ton of foreign athletes competing in the US college system. And except for tennis and men’s soccer, they are sending their very best over.
In track, Andre De Grasse, Emanuel Korir, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Kirani James…the best of the best. All recent D-1 athletes.
Meanwhile, Noah Lyles, his brother Josephus who would make literally every other national team, Erryion Knighton, and some of these recent high school cross country stars have all gotten shoe deals as high schoolers.
Any shoe company would have been thrilled to sign Michael Norman, Allyson Felix, and Sydney McLaughlin as well, if they could have convinced them to skip college.
But I don’t see how college swimming, track, womens volleyball, women’s soccer, water polo, etc collapse.
NIL isn’t going to mess with Title IX

Didn’t Brazier have a broken foot? I thought he completely shut down his 2021 season after trials.

Yes, running in the trials caused further injury so they shut him down.

If football breaks away from the NCAA soon, Title IX may not matter at all. Without that money cow funding everything else, Olympic sports in America would basically die.

Olympic sports did fine begore gargantuan tv contracts for football. The facility wars in non revenue sports may die down, but i won't pretend that's a terrible thing.

Hell yeah, good for him!

If football is contested through universities and players are on athletic scholarships, I don’t see how that changes the situation.
