It’s the same exact injury and wasn’t a worse version of that injury as far as I know

Not the same problem. Hurd’s issue is much worse.

You don’t think they were both pars defect?
Or
You think it’s a worse version?

He’s already throwing and it’s been less than three months so it’s no worse than Josh

How long did Josh sit?

Literally, no such thing. Everybody(every BODY) is different. And, like any injury, playing through it can occasionally make your body over compensate and cause other injuries. Moscona today tried not to, but clearly hinted he’s also dealing with an arm injury. Moscona may not know dick, but it didn’t sound great to me.

How do you know that? What do you know that the general public doesnt?

Like my other post said, SI.com reported this in April. Hurd has a “pars defect” which does not always hurt unless aggravated. Whether he has a spondylolisthesis as well would be something I would think MLB teams will want to know. Seeing as he missed the rest of the season, I’d say he likely does.

Josh Smith was reported as having a “stress reaction”. If reported correctly, that, by definition, is edema (swelling) from inflammation in the pedicles of the spine. You rest it or run the risk of it fracturing.

Hurd’s issue is with the pars. Not the same thing.

If Moscona said he has an arm injury then he can throw 125 pitches tomorrow on 3 days rest.

I had this injury as a sophomore in high school. Took time off twice and came back and hurt it again. It wasn’t until then that it was properly diagnosed, and I had to shut everything down and wear a brace for about 6 months. Luckily, I never had any issues after that, and that was 25 years ago. I probably was taking way more combined non-game reps (ground balls, cage cuts, and pen pitches) than he was/is in a body less built for all the stress (16 vs. 18/19), and there’s no question he has better doctors, trainers, PTs, etc…and was likely diagnosed earlier, all that.

However, I remember how bad that shite hurt at times, and I didn’t have several million dollars at stake. I am not wishing this on him and hate to even put it in the ether, but considering his money year isn’t until ‘24 and how conservative the trend is currently to handle pitchers, I think there’s a much better than 0 chance he doesn’t pitch for us in ‘23. Not saying it’s 75, 50, 25, or even 10–what I’m saying is I hope we land the Southern Miss guy, too.

On Mikie Mahtook's show he said that Jay Johnson told him he'll give him whatever time he needs. If he needs to take it slow, or if he needs to be pitching, he just wants him to be healthy. He also said that he took a huge step in the recovery in the last week when he started throwing a bit. He's only in the first week in a throwing program and it's going to take some time to get back on the mound pitching. He said he's just going to get stronger and keep rehabbing and he'll be in Baton Rouge in August for School. He expects to be ready to go and back to normal by the time the season starts.

Would like to think if there were any serious questions about his back Coach JJ would hold off in hopes of landing a "safer" pick.

Beau Lowery gonna have that dude ready.

Josh sat 6 weeks or more IIRC.

The fact that’s already throwing means nothing to me. I’m more concerned about a re-injury.

Y’all can downvote all you want but I’m a physician and I treat this stuff everyday. I’d take a long hard look if I were Coach and not promise him anything.

Your vantage point is appreciated, we can only hope we don’t have the full story and those charged with his rehab are being duly cautious.

I dont downvote almost anyone, im just challenging you on this because everyone else involved, including the kid feels confident in being ready to roll by late fall at the latest. If you are really a physician familiar with this, well cool. I hope you are wrong, but respect your opinion

He’s a freshman and not draft eligible as a sophomore. Absolute worst case he can sit out next year too and we will still get him back.

The only concern I would have with him is it seems like UCLA did not stretch him very far at all. I’m not sure if they were cautious for a reason, or if they were just dumb. He had 9 appearances and only pitched a little over 30 innings.

It’s all good. Stress reaction (J Smith) heals. Pars defects do not and are always vulnerable.

Core strength is paramount!! He must use proper form on the mound as well as in the gym. The stronger his core, the more likelihood of his back staying pain free and the issue not getting worse.

The reports that he progressing nicely and on or ahead of schedule have to point to the less pessimistic prognosis right?
