Was just given a large fiberglass sugar kettle. I want to make a goldfish/Koi pond out of it. Any tips? Haven't went down the youtube rabbit hole yet. I was planning on putting it on pavers then making a hydrangea bed around it.

I have a fiberglass one going on 3 years now. I dug a hole to sink it about a 1/4 of the way in ground. I put some water hyacinth in to give shade/cover/oxygenate the water. 7 goldfish going strong now for 3 years. Oh I also put in a floating solar powered pump. It’s not that big and gives a little aeration. The hyacinths die back a little after flowering so that’s why they are a little brown . They come back to life though, I don’t think a nuclear explosion could kill them.

A guy in Prairieville makes custom copper features for the kettles. Google Waterfall forage.

A kettle is not big enough for koi, goldfish would probably cook in it during the summer.

Native sunfish would be a good option, or something like mollies.

It would still need lots of plant cover or shade for fish to thrive.

Even if it's shaded about half the day? It's a 5 ft kettle.

I plan on putting plants in it

Set ours in an old car tire. Easy to level that way.

I have a 2 tier sugar kettle fountain. A 2 foot overflowing into a 6 foot. I wouldn't think very large fish would make it in it. But regular goldfish should be fine.

Brian’s furniture in Port Allen sells a base or it. Pretty inexpensive.

We have a 6’ on that is shaded for part of the day and the goldfish have been doing well for years. We have a small pond pump that filters and aerates the water. There is a small hole that we drilled on the top side for overflow to keep from losing any fish during a hard rain. We added a lotus and pickerel weed. Both plants are potted in heavy clay soil and have rocks on top of the soil. The pickerel weed need thinning out every year because it will take over the entire pot.

It's the opposite actually. I found this out the hard way.

Where have y'all purchased aquatic plants? I was going to give LA Nursery/Cleggs a call. Ordering a small solar pump today.
