Russia warned NATO member Lithuania on Monday that unless the transit of goods to Russia's Kaliningrad exclave on the Baltic Sea was swiftly restored then Moscow would take undisclosed measures to defend its national interests.

With east-west relations at a half-century low over Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, Vilnius banned the transit of goods sanctioned by the European Union through Lithuanian territory to and from the exclave, citing EU sanction rules.

Russia's foreign ministry summoned Lithuania's top envoy in Moscow to deliver a protest while the Kremlin said the situation was beyond serious.

"The situation is more than serious," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "This decision is really unprecedented. It's a violation of everything."

Russia's foreign ministry demanded Vilnius reverse what it cast as an "openly hostile" move immediately.

I was told the sanctions were working -- I mean working to do something other than bankrupt Americans.

An embargo is an act of war. How about Lithuania not unilaterally abrogate a treaty and put NATO in a crap situation.

Article V shouldn't mean little piss ant countries pick fights that brings the whole crew to the brawl.

NATO will launch a nuclear attack if Russia retaliates against Lithuania?

And now UK's top general is telling his soldiers to prepare for a land war in Europe.

Wrong. Blockades are an act of war. Embargoes are decidedly not.

This is an EU sanction.

Not a concern. Russia isn't going to do shite to Lithuania.

How is that any different than what all Western militaries have been preparing for since the 1870's?

For the world. You do know that Russia has over 2,000 nuclear, MIRV tipped ballistic missiles that can hit any city in the US in less than 30 minutes from launch, right?

Yeah, Biden and the EU might send him a very strongly worded letter.

The US is similarly situated. Two other NATO members also have nukes, and three others have agreements to carry/launch US nukes should the need arise.

Guess what? None of them are going to use them.

Russia is not going to nuclear war over Lithuanian rail cargo embargoes. It is not in their interest, and never will be.

If only someone would have told certain EU members it might not be a great idea to be so reliant on Russia for their energy needs. Well, live and learn I suppose

You are right. Blockades are an act of war and I used the incorrect noun. Preventing Russia from overland supply in contravention of a treaty is arguably a blockade.

Starving 500,000 Russians definitely could be construed as such.
