Hustler Raptor SD 54” - Caught on Fire

I wrapped up cutting a small spot on my lawn (ran about 10 minutes). I backed it my shop and shut it down. 5 minutes later I see smoke coming from the shop and the engine was on fire. It almost burned my house down. The fire department was able to extinguish the flames but my shop and all contents are destroyed. Anyone know what would cause the machine to catch fire like that? I see some issues with this mower where a clamp was found to wear a hole in the fuel line causing fires but nothing else. I would like to know if this mower is faulty. I bought it new and now has 250 hours on it.

Do not touch anything and ask the fire department on if you can get the number for the areas fire marshal. I'd have them come look and give a report.

Accumulation of dead grass & a bad, hot bearing on mower deck can cause fires. That’s why I blow grass off mower before I put it up…

Assuming it’s a few years old, did it have the muffler heat shield installed? It did not come stock and was an add-on after the fact, at least in 2016. This would burn grass if you parked/stopped while it was running. Maybe it had a buildup or you parked over something combustible?
I had a 48” Hustler Raptor SD with the Kohler engine. That’s only thing I recall about them when I was researching.

Some of the hustler brand mowers had engines that have an apparent block casting issue causing a crack and eventually failure. One potential is look for any oil leakage, if post fire oil is still present.

Wouldn’t this effect many mower brands? Hustler doesn’t make their own engines?

One would think so but can detest to first hand knowing 3 people this occurred to their Hustler.

fuel leak! that's the only think that could cause the scenario, but the ignition source is another interesting thought

Yeah, I think that’s BS. What model engine was on this 3 mowers?

Had u just filled it up with fuel? What year was the mower?
Just curious, I’d certainly like to know more of what they find.

You are entitled to an opinion...I don't own a hustler so engine model dosen't concern me.

The tank was full - I let it set 2 hours before moving it into the shop. It’s a 2019 model

Your story seems to change? The OP says you cut for 10 mins, put them mower away immediately, and then saw smoke?
Also, it could just be a coincidence with the mower. Is it possible you backed into something or otherwise something else in the shop caught fire?
