Long iron struggles

I have a big inability to hit my 4 or 5 iron on a consistent basis. I don’t know if it’s mental or if i’m trying to put too much power into the swing instead of letting the club do the work.

Anybody got any tips or “tricks” to improve the long iron game?

A really wide array of issues could be in play here. Where is your miss? I would leave my clubface open big time, shortening my backswing on my 4iron helped me close it.

My miss is always a bad slice.

There’s a couple times I can hit them good, but most the time it turns into a bad slice.

Try waiting as long as possible to hinge your wrists on the backswing. Sweep it back and don't start hinging your wrists until it feels like they're chest- or shoulder-high.

I had this same problem for a long time, don't know where I got this same tip but it helped me tremendously

This is my problem when I hit a bad 4i. If the 4i doesn’t go 220, don’t try to hit it 220. Simple thought but tough to do

Try moving the ball more forward in your stance if you're already not doing that

Think of it like you are swinging a short iron and don't try to overpower it just because it is supposed to go further. This helped my game tremendously several years ago.

It is probably too far up in your stance. Put the ball between your left nut and left heel. If that doesn't work I would hit a hybrid. Because if you move the ball back in your stance that's what a hybrid is designed to do.

That makes sense as that's common. The issue with long irons is a longer shaft which makes it more difficult to get the club face back around and closed. I think shortening your backswing should help. I also agree with other people that lots of folks will try to swing harder on their long irons because you think i need to hit it far vs shorter irons that you are trying to be accurate.

I got a 1 iron in my bag. Learn to hit it and you won’t have 4 and 5 iron problems

I've given up on 3-4 irons.

All that I do is hit low screaming hooks with them.

I can adjust my 22 hybrid to cover the distances with a straight and high shot.

I put the ball where I would for a hybrid. Just a touch behind fairways. Then put the same swing on it. The extra length will make up the swing speed.

Yup. I think letting the club head catch up with your swing is the key. Tempo is your friend. Don’t slow down, but rather keep the same tempo from backswing through the ball.

The problem with a question like this on a forum is there could be a hundred problems and even more solutions. Hell, it could be that his shafts are a little weak with too much torque and when he gets into longer irons it really leaves it back. We are just guessing unless we see it and can pinpoint an issue.

Is this issue persistent into a driver also?

Do you play a fade in your shorter irons and it gets worse the longer the club?

Where does your miss hit the club face? What is the flight height? Low heel will produce a low spiny slice most of the time, something simple like sliding half a ball farther from the ball may help be a fix.
