yep, thanks

couldnt remember the name of it and calling it "that big fan looking plant" didnt bring any search results lol

i think its called the "saw palmetto" if it has the razor edges and just palmetto if it doesnt

now that i know its name i found this

scientific name - Serenoa
Serenoa repens, commonly known as saw palmetto, is the sole species currently classified in the genus Serenoa. It is a small palm, growing to a maximum height around 7–10 ft. It is endemic to the subtropical and tropical Southeastern United States, most commonly along the south Atlantic and Gulf Coastal plains and sand hills. It grows in clumps or dense thickets in sandy coastal areas, and as undergrowth in pine woods or hardwood hammocks.

i have one that is about 6ft high growing up under my fence that i need to dig out and/or chop down, so that should be a fun job that will get me all bloody

Anyone know how deeply those root?
Would they be good for erosion control?

Don’t do it. There’ll be a rattlesnake under every one of them the first year.

I dug a stray one out of my flower bed once. They go straight down into a kind of bulb, like the base of celery. Pretty deep, but not much root spread to help mitigate erosion.

They are a palm so not much of a root system. For a shady area Canadian wild rye or Inland Sea Oats, both grasses, are good for erosion control.

well i got it out, it was a PITA because it was like peeling an onion.

i would chop away and get a few layers to come off and pull those out of the way and then back to chopping again.

in the end the root base was about the size of a basketball but the ax did the job even though i nearly passed out from the heat. damn it was fricking hot out there today.

pretty sure half the root ball stayed in the ground so maybe i'll go back with a shovel and try to dig it out if i need to. should i need to do that so it doesnt resprout or will it just die on its own now that everything above ground is gone and im sure i got a few good licks into the root ball with the ax?

next up is pulling all the damn honeysuckles off the fence (about 20ft of it) and then weed eating under the fence to finish cleaning everything up before spraying more weed killer
