I think after reading much about what Penrose has to say on the matter of consciousness, specifically referencing the incompleteness theorems in mathematics as evidence that the human concept of “understanding” cannot be reduced down to computational algorithms, I’ve been able to sleep better knowing that any sentience that AI expresses is probably illusory.

This thread has become sentient and has started itself multiple times now

An AI can only recognize what it's told to recognize. You can feed it a billion pictures of real dogs, but it's not going to be able to identify a cartoon dog as a dog. Like a human can.

Not good for the woke crowd.

Every time they created an algorithm to come up with solutions using data as the sole input, the output ended up racist and sexist.

I'm working towards my Google Cloud Architect certification right now. I'm looking forward to the Terminator shooting me at home one day.

the short answer is that Godel proved that there will always exist mathematical truths for which there is no mathematical proof that can exist. It doesn’t matter what the fundamental axioms of the mathematics are, true statements will exist that cannot be formally proven with any possible algorithm.

Penrose extrapolates this and says: these statements that we know are true based on the rules of a system, but cannot be formally derived and proven from these same rules via algorithm, imply our “understanding” of why these mathematical statements are true must be based on something more profound than simple computational processes. He nominates quantum effects as a cause, I think the answer may very well be somewhere in metaphysics; but I found the argument convincing.
