There was a sound developing early up around Detroit, that was like a stepping stone and doesn't get enough credit.
The MC5 is probably the most influential garage band ever.
Iggy and the Stooges are another Detroit-area band that came from the 1960's. I liked them and saw Iggy Pop at a club in Southdowns Shopping Center when I was at LSU.
Let's not forget about The Amboy Dukes/Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, and Bob Seger.
The Bob Seger System - Ramblin Gamblin Man
Skunk - The MC5
I Wanna Be Your Dog - Iggy & The Stooges

MC5 played the Speakeasy, were you around for that?
NY Dolls played BR w/ BOC and Kiss

No, post-Kingfish. This was in the early 1980's.

I remember the Speakeasy on Stanford Avenue, but I was a a little fellow then.

My brother was at this show. I think it may have been at Independence Hall by the Capitol.

Dave Clark Five. Over the last 10 years or so of road trips I have heard a lot of songs that I attributed to others that were DC5

Otherwise generally unremarkable

Another vote for The Kinks, although STP is probably not that far behind.

Cowboy Mouth
The minute Jenny Says was played a second time on radio, Cowboy Mouth was forever overrated. Woof.

Some of y'all did not read the question. Key word is "underrated". Y'all have listed some of the greatest and most revered bands in history. The Doors, Kansas, Pixies, STP, The Cars, Producers.
Here is my answer.

but STP's Shangri La De Da has some gems on it as well
Not to get off topic but since you mentioned it, Too Cool Queenie is one of my favorite STP songs. Just wish it was longer.

Might as well add The Sweet to this list.
Considering all the bands they influenced you could make a case they were the first Hair Band in R&R history.

Local H gets my nomination. They are incredible. Add Deep Purple as well.

Don't get me wrong, I love STP, but Purple alone is probably top 5 90s rock albums. I wouldn't call them most underrated all time.
I think you might consider them that as they don't get the same level of mention as other alternative rock bands that came out at the roughly the same time (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc)
