do yourself a solid...this Sunday morning, wake up before everyone else, take your headphones down to the den, maybe a little lamplight, make a cup of coffee and visit that world. The world that is Pet Sounds. Your welcome.

If it’s good enough to inspire Sgt. Pepper’s from The Beatles it’s good enough for me.

My feelings exactly.

It was way ahead of its time. It was Brian Wilson at his best. It is cool to see how the band was able to transform from writing pop beach / summer songs to writing full albums of deep and connected music, much like the Beatles. You don't really see modern bands make that transformation...at least I can't think of any.
Pet Sounds + Smile are hard to beat.

But wasn't Endless Summer a compilation? Not to pick nits, but it's not the same, no?

Yes and it's not remotely the same. A better alternative to Pet Sounds would be Smile. It is awesome and works as a unified album even better than Pet Sounds but not as ground breaking. Love them both.

Listening now. Beautiful. Thanks for the reminder it’s been awhile.

I made a friend do that with "Songs in the Key of Life" and he said he had no idea how much there was going on there.

I recently bought the Analogue Productions 2 45rpm version and was absolutely blown away. It was like discovering the album for the first time. Highly recommended.

Yes, it was a compilation. I was just agreeing with Morbid’s opinion, not trying to create a disagreement.

Watching Love and Mercy on HBO got me listening to it again. I loved it growing up and had no idea why, then when I got older and started playing music I couldn't comprehend how Brian Wilson came up with all this stuff. Perfect example of a tortured genius

I love Pet Sounds but this actually the best argument you can make for not playing Pet Sounds. Sgt. Peppers is the most overrated album in the history of music. I'm only lukewarm on the Beatles to begin with but I wouldn't put Sgt. Peppers on my top five Beatles albums. It is nowhere remotely close to as good as Abbey Road and the White Album to name two better Beatles albums just off the top of my head.

Ha ha. Ok. Well the great masses and authorities on music disagree.
“Sgt. Pepper is regarded by musicologists as an early concept album that advanced the roles of sound composition, extended form, psychedelic imagery, record sleeves, and the producer in popular music. The album had an immediate cross-generational impact and was associated with numerous touchstones of the era's youth culture, such as fashion, drugs, mysticism, and a sense of optimism and empowerment. It is considered one of the first art rock LPs, a progenitor to progressive rock, and the start of the album era.
In 1968, it won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, the first rock LP to receive this honour; in 2003 it was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. It has topped several critics' and listeners' polls for the best album of all time, including those published by Rolling Stone magazine and in the book All Time Top 1000 Albums, and the UK's "Music of the Millennium" poll. It remains one of the best-selling albums of all time and was still, in 2018, the UK's best-selling studio album”

“The Pepper myth is bigger, but the music on The White Album is far superior,” -John Lennon
George Harrison and Ringo Starr also didn’t think Sgt. Pepper was the peak of The Beatles. In fact, both spoke of being bored during the making of the album in ’67.
Why the Sgt Pepper sessions were so boring for Ringo Starr and George Harrison
Keith Richards, both a contemporary and longtime Beatles rival, memorably called it a "mishmash of rubbish."

Can't find it on the internet but I know I've read somewhere where Lou Reed hated the album too.

As I said the overwhelming consensus of musical authorities and listening public disagree with you and I don’t see the part where any of the people you mentioned called it the most overrated album in the history of music.

Pepper was ground breaking and one of the great albums of all time. It was a step forward from all that came before it. You may not care for it but it’s timelessness is obvious.

I have no dog in this fight, but that group, especially the former, is one big circle jerking echo chamber.

I agree with Wildcat too and my opinion is greater than any others you mentioned as it pertains to me.
