Looking to buy new irons ***UPDATE***

I have scheduled a fitting at Club Champion on Monday. Naturally I want to see what technology says I should buy based on a series of metrics but Im also looking for opinions prior so I have some unbiased thoughts as well. I am 55 years old and still playing my Ping Eye 2's that I got in 1987 (your laugh here). Back then I was about a 1 or 2 handicap but now Im about a 10. Ive lost distance as Ive aged and am looking to reclaim some of that. My questions would be.
1. How to reclaim distance? Is it just technology of newer clubs or might graphite shafts help as well.
2. Cavity back or blades? If there is such a thing.
3. Buy at Club Champion or take their advice and buy online?
Open to any advice.
UPDATE
So I had the fitting today. Went in with no expectations. Hit my PING Eye 2 6 iron a few times. Average distance was about 140 (Im getting old). Hit the Mizunos and loved them. Had an Oban CT-115 Steel Shaft and the ball flew off the club. That 6 iron was going 170 and I thought I had found the clubs for me. Until...I hit the PING i525 with the same shaft. 6 iron was going 190 and I couldnt believe it. The PING was the last club I hit and I was pretty tired by that point but it was clearly superior for me. It wasn't just the distance either as the club felt great and the shots were all landing close to one another so it was the most accurate club as well. Bought 4-PW now just waiting for them to come in. Thanks for all the great advice.

1. Yes
2. Let your swing and fitter determine that, based on age I would guess CB.
3. Get all of your specs and piece together a set from FB or online.

Be mindful when comparing distances of your old irons to todays irons because of the jacked-up lofts many of the irons are built with these days. Your old 8 iron is likely going to be the same loft as today's 9 iron.
You'll gain some distance with new shafts - both steel and obviously graphite have improved.
If you want a good mix of distance, feel, and forgiveness, I'd recommend something like the Mizuno JPX-921 Forged/Hot Metal Pro, Srixon ZX-5, or Taylormade P770/P790.

But your new 8 iron will spin the same as your old 8 iron.
And have a higher launch, the loft debate really makes no difference if the flight characteristics are correct

The shafts, length, loft, lie and swing weights all matter. The prices at CC are higher, but you get what you pay for in a custom built clubs with a guarantee that I have seen honored before. Doing the fitting and then trying to find something "close" is a waste in my opinion and there are many fake heads and shafts with fake stickers on the internet .

This will have the opposite effect and make you more biased. Any major brand will produce a good club, its just a matter of which fits your swing and which you feel comfortable with.

Disagree. I got my clubs built by a fitter that builds Tour players clubs for 2/3s of what CC charges

Go with an open mind. Don’t be brand loyal. Although, Pings may fit you right.
Know if the fitter is a rep for a brand. He will push you that way.
The right shaft is extremely important.
If you don’t LOVE it, don’t buy it. Go home do your homework based on the number you got. Make an informed decision.
If you LOVE it, but it and don’t looks back.
Last, don’t feel bad coming back another day and making sure you are getting the right thing. You’ll get tired making that many cuts. Bring water and a towel.

I'd start with Mizuno JPX 921 Forged/Hot Metal or MP 223/225 and see what you like best from Mizuno. Then hit a few other comparable clubs from other manufacturers to see if they can knock the Mizunos out of the bag. But I'm a Mizuno guy so that brand would be my starting point to work off from.
You could do the same thing with your favorite brand. You hit Ping forever. Start with the latest Ping lines, find the best for you, then take a comparable line from, say, Mizuno, Titleist, TaylorMade, and Srixon and see if any of them are better.
The real key to the fitting is the shafts. All these companies have great club tech these days.
Have fun!

Mizuno jpx 921 hot metal or forged. +1000
Still waiting on my new set of 921 HMs to arrive. I’ve played Mizuno irons for the last 6/7 years. You won’t find anything better imo. They are the gold standard.

I got a used set of TZoids at 14 and have only played Mizuno for 25 yrs now.
I progressed to playing blades when I played more regularly....then I hit the 921s and I questioned everything.
Why am I trying to move the ball with blades when I can hit straight lasers with these 921s?
On week #5 waiting for my 921s.

I went back to the blades because I can’t move the 921s. Or get them in the air really. Or stop them on a green. Just straight knuckle balls that I can’t predict at all. Zero spin. I need to sell them. Although I’m keeping the more forgiving 4 iron in the bag
