AR does not stand for "assault rifle". It stands for ARmalite Rifle,

MANY years ago. It is a relic now replaced by Bull pup styled "rifles".

I have a couple of those also.

Guess what? Neither has been responsible for a mass shooting.

That's complete bullshite. Even the Army's new XM5 to replace the M4's is a not bullpup. Bullpups suck, the manual of arms to change magazines sucks, the triggers suck, clearing malfunctions suck. Out side of the British and Israelis, most militaries do not issue bullpup rifles. France is ditching the FAMAS for HK416's currently.

As for the OP: Assault Rifle is a technical term, the US military gives it a distinct meaning as does the term Battle Rifle. Assault Weapon is a non-technical, amorphous, politically loaded term. That's why proposed laws state Assault Weapon (e.g. the The Assault Weapons Ban of 1994), because if they stated Assault Rifle then they would be bound to the specific legal definition of a rifle.
