The success Russia has had in the Donbas and SE Ukraine is tolerable for the West and always has been. It's a quagmire Russia will win at high cost. As you indicate, it avoids the flashpoints so perilous to the West.
This thread doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'm sure he meant the West has an interest in limiting the likelihood of an incident with a NATO country (Poland, most likely), which is greatly increased by fighting in Lviv and greatly decreased if the conflict retracts to the Donbas.

Imagine if Trump gave the Ukrainians $40 billion and then we have a school shooting. He would get impeached 16 times, drawn and quartered, impeached another 16 times then hung. No way would the media and the leftist in congress would let that one go.
