I googled, but was surprised to see we haven't done this before. Other than specifically Fredericksburg. So, can anyone suggest some hill country spots?
Well be staying at Canyon Lake, but Wimberley, New Braunfels, San Marcos, etc. Would all be fine. Even as far as natural Bridge caverns area, which we'll get to during the week. TIA

in gruene there’s the gristmill which is decent and there’s a cool wine bar across the street. Catch a show at the dance hall and that’s a half day well spent.

Gruene River Grill has way better food and a great view and is also right by Gruene Hall.
Clear Springs in NB has great fried catfish. It's always packed but it's huge so the wait times aren't too bad.
Lone Star Float House in NB is right on the river, it's kind of divey and they usually have live music, and their burgers are amazing.
The Tap Room in San Marcos is a staple among TX State students. It's been years since I've been but I remember the burgers being huge and so good.

Roughhouse brewing is on a ranch and has good sandwiches and tacos
Devils Backbone Tavern, while not food, is near the lake and is an old school bar and has big name bands play there.
In Wimbereley, The Leaning Pear has great outdoor seating on the creek and the food is local sourced/seasonal. Chill's on the Creek is a good casual place with great outdoor seating on the creek. Community Pizza is good wood fired pizza and a great beer selection.
10 minutes north of Wimbereley is the Shady Llama which is an outdoor beer garden where I can spent hours looking at the view and watching the sunset while sipping a good selection of craft beer. They have a food truck that has good tacos and burgers.
In New Braunfels, Guadalupe Brewing has great pizza too.
Comfort may be too far from the lake but High's Cafe is really good food and nice outdoor seating. There is a winery and a distillery just behind High's that is good for a stop.
Boerne has some good places too with Cibolo Creek Brewing that has a farm-to-table menu being one of my favorite.

Been to Roughhouse. That's a really cool place. Lots of saisons and farmhouse ales when I went 2-3 years ago.
And Shady Llama is already on the agenda after our Blue hole reservation. We love that place. Hopefully the llamas come see us this time.
I will definitely get to Guadalupe brewing this trip.
Thanks for the other recs!

Pardon the obvious, but I think you’re duty bound to have some bbq.
So either Eaker in Fredericksburg or Hays Co. in San Marcos. No other bbq joint should be in the conversation unless you consider Seguin, Austin, or San Antonio.

It’s been a while, but I remember Cowboy Steak House in Kerrville was good.
