I didn’t see them as they were already brought to the sheriff’s office yard for further investigation. I heard that Kenny’s bass boat wasn’t in bad shape since it went over the aluminum boat’s bow. Aluminum boat’s bow was peeled back. Both were still floating when recovered.

Were they both running when collided or was the aluminum boat stopped?

That's sad to hear. I grew up loving to night fish. My dad, brother and I used to night fish all of the time, especially for walleye in northern Wisconsin.
Now I barely do it. If I do go, I don't even make it out to the main channels.

Has it been released who was driving either boat? Not that it changes anything, but I can't imagine the mental distress of being at the helm of a fatal crash especially if it involved my dad.
eta: It appears both operators are the deceased.

Not 100% sure, but I think each driver is the deceased.

Looks like you are correct. The WLF link says
quote:
The body of the operator of the 20-foot vessel, Shea Mouton, 31, of Fordoche, was recovered from False River following the incident. Search and rescue crews searched for St. Romain, who was the operator of the bass boat, until he was recovered this morning, May 22.
A passenger of the 20-foot vessel and a passenger of the bass boat were both ejected into the water and were picked up by a good Samaritan.

I got sent that this morning but didn't know if it was a pic that the guy minded me sharing or not.
Three things I've learned from this:
A) inflatable life jackets aren't worth the risk
B)those heavy fiberglass boats are worth the money when it hits the fan
C) not all aluminum boats are made the same, thing looks like an aluminum can

Thanks for posting this pic. Sad to see Kenny’s boat like this. I’ve caught plenty of fish and have tons of memories with him on that triton.

Saw the inflatable mentioned, but does anyone know the type? Was it manual or automatic? Personally I don’t see why anyone would use the manual, but they are out there. We put our autos through the ringer and as long as you maintained it properly, it was going to inflate within seconds of hitting the water. And had to be submerged, no rain or water hose was setting it off.

I've got no clue on the brand he had, but one common mistake I saw a few times on Lone Star Law was people not knowing the vests had to be "activated" by fully attaching the oxide tank or by pulling a tab inside the vest. I know it might be common sense but if it helps one person know about it it's worth mentioning.

The manual has the pull cord that has to be pulled to puncture the CO2 cylinder, whereas the auto has a "salt" pill that dissolves when it makes contact with water, releasing the pin to puncture the CO2. One of the laws for inflatables is they have to be in Green condition, which shows it is armed correctly and is ready to inflate. Under 16 years old is unable to wear them.
The problem with the manual is if you get tossed and are unconscious, you are just wearing another article of clothing at that point. The problem with the auto is if you don't check/service it frequently, the unit may not be armed properly.
I think the autos are great and wore them for many years in the Coast Guard in all conditions, but like everything else they need to be maintained properly. Plus, people are much more likely to wear the inflatables rather than the standard bulky vest.
