Always been the weakest part of my game, how do y’all handle bunker shots?

How good often do you get up and down out of bunkers?

Swing as hard as you can and try to break a window 40 yards over the green

I focus about a half inch behind the ball, open stance, slightly open face, swing out to in, accelerate through the shot

1. IF there is sand, hit the sand out.

2. IF it is thin or wet, open blade, weight forward, barely miss the ball by sliding the blade under it.

Open the face way up but you have to open your stance way up too. Get into a deep squat like you are gonna take a shite in the bunker.

Usually I to try to get as much club speed as I could with that shot. But lately I've been taking a little off of it and still getting really good results.

My real key is making sure that I get the lines on the edge of the grooves pointed at the target.

Don't you mean hit the sand.

Dig in, open stance. Open blade, club head in front of hands, pressure on left leg. Hit sand w bounce and maintain club face open. Keep pressure on left leg and maintain squat.

Be careful opening the stance too much, tends to add loft to the face...

Best drill I’ve seen is draw a line in sand before and after ball and scoop up that sand.
Then just imagine that line and hit. Who did the ball.

People saying speed is key can be misleading. I am a golf pro and this piece of advice gets muddled. The key is not speed it is acceleration… do not swing as hard as you can but make sure you accelerate through impact and knock the swab of sand out of the bunker. The ball rides the swab of sand out of the bunker and if the sand doesn’t get out the ball won’t. Unless you catch too much ball

Bunker shots are technically easy but are meant to make you feel uneasy. Your average golfers don’t often practice them, and feel intimated why them get them in a round. If you don’t have time to practice this often here are some tips.

1. Don’t be a perfectionist. Fully controlling shots out of bunkers is difficult, getting balls up and on the green is not. Just learn to hit a basic bunker shot to get you back in play.

2. Open up the club face and use the bounce. I’ve seen many players make the mistake of using a 60 from the sand. Unless you are pinned on a lip this is a bad idea. In order to fully use the bounce you have to open the club face to have it sit lower that the leading edge. Use your 52-56 to accomplish this without de-lofting the club too much. Don’t forget to open your stance accordingly.

3. Acceleration and follow through. You are trying to use the sand to lift the ball. This will incur a lot more resistance than just an average chip. Hit slight behind the ball with controlled acceleration and follow through. This will allow the ball to get airborne and on the green.

4. Don’t always think you have to take a direct line to the pin. Sometimes I see armatures playing difficult stances or bad angles out. The goal of you are a mid-high capper is just to get back in play. It might be better for you to aim for a more open part of the green, or into a slope to keep the ball on the green. This will help avoid shots that get you into more trouble and exacerbate your fear of the bunkers. Just get it out and move on.

Bunkers are mostly psychological to an improving golfer. Don’t let it be, it’s a part of golf and will still be there when you are single digits. Just play the ball out and move on. I promise you will improve with this mentality.

Hit about an inch behind the ball, open club face slightly, weight on front foot, hinge wrist early in take away and feel like u are “scooping” the ball. Try it, worked wonders for me.

Good bunkers, about half the time. Practiced 10 shots yesterday when I went to the range yesterday. 30-35 foot shot. Holed 1, 4 inside 4 feet, 1 that didn’t get on but was in the fringe, the rest probably 8-12 feet.

Pretty good fluffy sand though. If it had been thin and firm, wouldn’t have been worse I’m sure

The thing that helped me the most was to make sure NOT to have any forward press on my grip. Hands should be even with or almost feel slightly behind the ball. This basically goes with the advice of letting the bounce to work for you. Any forward press will cause the leading edge to dig and hit it fat.

The hardest part of a bunker shot is figuring out the sand itself and what kind of shot to play for the different surfaces.

Yep. At the course now, hit it in the bunker on 4 at old colony. Wet and felt kinda firm under, so I didn’t swing as hard expecting better ball contact. Left it 15 feet short on a 25y or so bunker shot. Didn’t come out the way I thought. Fortunately made the putt

2nd bunker, on 16, deep sand under the lip. Came out a little better than expected, 10 feet downhill, left it and inch short right on line….50%
