A Kidney Stone Story (might help someone, I hope)

For quite a while, I would have severe right testicle pain that would resolve itself within 24 hours or less. Oddly, aspirin worked well to tone it down. When the pain went away, I'd piss blood for about 1/2 a day.
I'd go to the doctor but by that time the symptoms were gone. It was suggested that I might have passed a small kidney stone, or that I had a strain. The assumption was that it was a testicle problem, but nothing ever showed up other than blood in the urine. They performed tests on the bladder and testicles but not the kidney.
Then, I passed a real kidney stone - the pain level was very different. The ER doctor said "you have another stone" but without much detail. Turns out I have a giant stone (3/4 inch) in the lower lobe of my right kidney (that is getting removed next week). I have now figured out that my 4-5 yearly rounds of bad testicle pain and bloody urine were the result of this large stone "ball valving."
I went 3-4 years with "mysterious" ball pain and no one ever decided to take a picture of my kidneys until I passed a stone that required an ER visit.
I should have insisted on a kidney shot (but I was admittedly somewhat lackadaisical as I got used to the "routine" when the pain arose). I could have avoided a lot of grief.
This came to mind because at 3 a.m. my large stone decided to ball valve.

Pretty terrible doctors you went to over that span

I’d be seeking out a different doctor for primary care moving forward

You should shove the kidney stone up that doctor’s arse.

What this?

That sucks.
Recurring hematuria should be a time to see a urologist. Your PCP should have punted. There are times where punting is best.
Two words OP. “Ureteral Stent”. Sorry.

feel for ya man.
I've had about 20 or so in my life, lost count a while back.
bout the only thing you can do is drink a ton of water and even that may not be enough. Some people just suffer from them.

I’ve had around 30 in my life. The largest being 11mm.
Get your primary to write you a script of flomax and Toridol. Toridol is made specifically to work better with Kidney pain. They also make a nasal version. Sprix. It’s about as instant of a relief that exists.
Good luck.

I lived your story back in January. Apparently I had a rock in my kidney for about a year. It started trying to pass Christmas Eve day, I went to the local po dunk arse hospital er where they checked my heart, found I had evelated white blood cells, they told me I was not having a heart attack and gave me antibiotics patted me on my arse and sent me home. Two weeks later I woke up at midnight convinced I was dying. I self diagnosed as having pancreatitis got in my car drove myself 2 hours to one of the big hospitals. Where after a CT found out I had the equivalent of a 9mm bullet stuck in my urethra.
Got it removed and all is well.

I've been dealing with one for 17 months. Went to the ER after the 6th day. I already knew what it was. They did a CT and said it was 7mm and it was located just before the bladder. They didn't have a urologist there so gave me flomax and referred me to a urologist.
Thanks to covid I couldn't get ahold of him till after 9 months! By then they said the referral wasn't any good and I needed to get another one. Called my Dr and he set me up with one within 2 weeks. I go and they do an xray. Said it had shrunk to 4mm and gave me more flomax to see if it would pass on its own. The last pain I had was over 2 weeks ago and I believe it finally went into the bladder but have not passed it. I do not wish them on my worst enemy

I passed one Saturday.
I do not wish that pain on anybody..... except maybe GTL's shellfish conch.

I had an 8mm stone in December that caused pain in my right testicle but not back and side pain. I thought it was epididimitis so I went to a walk-in clinic. Did a urinalysis and had blood in my urine. Went to a urologist and had a CT scan and found the stone. Scheduled surgery for right after Christmas but actually pissed it out the night before the surgery.
Moral of the story, no two kidney stones have the same symptoms.

My dad had a hematuria event early March, before covid caught fire. Turns out it was bladder cancer, not a stone. Which is exactly why you should see a urologist when these things occur.

I never had one, I hope to god I never get one. I just know that my brother in law is a tall, at the time kind of built. Not someone you think would cry over some pain, but he had a kidney stone and the pain had him in tears so that sucks you had to go through that.
If they catch them before you pass one they can now do something to break it up right?

Seeing blood in urine should always result in a trip to PCP then a CT scan, if in a large amount of pain a trip to ER. 9/10 times it will be a stone.

Keys to success:
Hydration
quote:
Several studies have shown that increasing fluid intake reduces the risk of stone formation. Current guidelines recommend drinking enough fluids to produce at least 2.5 L of urine daily. Soda consumption may play a role in stone formation...However, this only held true for patients who drank phosphoric acid-containing sodas, which consist primary of the colas, and not in patients who drank citric acid-containing sodas, which include most clear soft drinks
Citric Acid
quote:
Consuming fruit juice prevents stone formation not only because it increases urine volume but also because it is high in potassium and citric acid. Citrate prevents stone formation by two mechanisms. First, it binds with urinary calcium, thereby reducing the supersaturation of urine. In addition, it binds calcium oxalate crystals and prevents crystal growth.
Orange juice, lemon/lime flavored drinks. Look on your ingredients lists for citric acid. Crystal light packets. As mentioned above: You do NOT want phosphoric acid beverages (colas and diet colas)
Calcium
quote:
There is a common misconception that decreasing calcium intake will reduce the risk of calcium stone formation. In fact, studies have shown that low dietary calcium actually increases the risk of developing symptomatic kidney stones. Target calcium intake is 1,200 mg
Fish Oil
quote:
Consuming 1,200 mg/d of fish oil has been associated with significant decreases in urinary calcium and oxalate concentrations and increases in urinary citrate concentration. . Cold-water fish, including salmon, tuna, mackerel, and sardines; walnuts; flax seeds; and canola oil are rich sources of EPA.
Keys to failure:
Dehydration
quote:
If you are not pissing, the urine is sitting in your kidneys and marinating.
Drink liquids, pee a lot.
Oxalate
quote:
Higher oxalate intake has been shown to increase urinary oxalate levels....Together, spinach, potatoes, and nuts account for 44% of oxalate intake for the average American. The simplest way to minimize oxalate intake is to monitor consumption of these foods. In younger women, chocolate is a significant source of dietary oxalate intake and should be consumed sparingly.
Eat oxalate rich foods with caution. Don't be a glutton
Vitamin C
quote:
Vitamin C, at the super-dosages found in supplements, increases urine oxalate concentration because ascorbic acid is metabolized to oxalate.
Do NOT supplement vitamin C unless told to by a doctor.

Removed? I had one that was too big to pass. They did a procedure that involved shooting it with sound waves to break it up into smaller pieces. Non-invasive. No stent.

I had 3 bouts of kidney stones in my early 30s. One was scary painful, one painful, and one not-so-bad. Never had any testicle pain. Only lower/side back pain.

i've had off and on right testicle pain that'll be for about a day and usually go away. never pissed blood etc at all ever.

I’ve had 4 calcium oxalate stones until I started drinking lemon juice. The lemon juice dissolves the small stones. You can do a search and research it.
