Both of those areas get some legitimate winter, but if you are from Idaho, you can handle it. Cleveland gets it much worse than both of those towns though since its right on the lake.

I am from Louisiana, but we've been here for 5 years. I prefer a heavy snow when it first falls, it really quiets things down. It can get nasty, however, after a while.

This post is informative. I know Akron is a depressed area, but I can't imagine it being as bad as Alexandria, LA. I lived there for 25 years, and I certainly don't want to go back, but I know I can handle that sort of environment if I have some privacy. A nice plot of land for cheaper can provide just that.

I'm not keen on Cleveland, but I do acknowledge the airport, the medical system, and some higher wealth areas that might have good entertainment.

I worry about the lack of sunshine more than anything.

Are these your only choices?

Is this job related?

Not a knock on you or the cities you listed but I'm baffled as to why these places in particular.

We had 82 metros to choose from. My wife has to be within 3 hours of her companies "hubs". I did pretty extensive research and it all came down to priorities. We wanted somewhere we could afford, where the crime wasn't bad, I could find a job (accounting). From there it was process of elimination. It's hard to do this with just statistics, but we can't visit that many areas, so we had to whittle it down somehow.

For example, some other areas and the reasons we eliminated them were:
Fayetteville(AR) -- Housing too high
Scranton -- High unemployment/small city
Fort Smith -- Not enough accountant jobs
Gainesville -- Not enough accountant jobs
KC -- Violent crime too high
Morgantown -- Too gloomy/not enough sun (Ohio cities ALMOST made this cut)
Duluth -- Too much snow

Just a few examples

The lack of sunshine is a lot worse than the snow. It’s not usually bitterly cold, and they are prepared for snow, so even after big storms the roads are cleared almost as soon as the snow stops.

Columbus is a lot nicer overall than Akron, but there are nice rural areas near Akron that would be an easier drive than commuting into Columbus. Akron gets about the same amount of snow as Columbus.

Powell, Ohio is a northern suburb just outside the northern Columbus city limits and it is really nice. Not cheap but very nice. Great schools. Good high school sports and room.

Greensboro

I have lived here for years and love it. Rolling hills, reasonable housing and great neighborhoods. Emerging brewery scene downtown even though you’re not in party mode.

There are 25 mountain biking trails (many interconnected) within 15 min of downtown. There are several lakes here along with hiking trails and a lot to do outdoors. There are multiple universities in town and there is no traffic.

We have a beach house and a boat at the coast which is where we spend many weekends during spring and summer. Before our kids were grown we had a lake boat in dry stack 15 minutes from our house here in GSO. Raleigh and Charlotte are easy drives and you can be at many beaches in 3.5 hrs, Hanging Rock in 45 minutes, Boone in 2 hrs and Asheville in 3. The ACC basketball tournament is played here often and theres also great golf if you play.

Not sure what you do for a living. Both Charlotte and Raleigh are exploding in every direction and Greensboro will grow tremendously over the next 5-10 years. As others have mentioned there are a lot of people moving here but that’s the case all over NC.

We get light snows 1-2 times a winter so it doesn’t suck Dec -Feb like it would in Columbus. Easy choice to me but I don’t like OH at all.

Eta - Summerfield, Oak Ridge, Stokesdale and Brown Summit are all ~25 min from Greensboro where you can get acreage since you mentioned that was a factor

We are about 70/30 on not having kids, maybe even 75/25, but its always good to keep the reputation of schools in mind. We go back and forth on price, as we don't have a terribly high income (~$100k) but I'll be eligible to take the CPA exam in May 2023, which should give us an above average income (assuming I pass).

Greensboro. Easy access to oceans and mountains, and a nice town.

Spent a few days in Greensboro and was very impressed. The streets were in good repair, and traffic was not bad at all. One of my drivers was a recent transplant from PA and was loving the area. He said some of the nearby cities did not have as nice of a street system and experienced traffic issues.

The absence of litter and cheesy lawyer billboards was striking and refreshing. Even homes in poorer parts of town were kept up and clean. Shopping centers and retail areas were tasteful with good landscaping, unlike the cheap and bare crap we see here so often.

The city parks were fantastic, and downtown has lots of good food and drink options. The minor league baseball park is darned nice and right in downtown. There are also colleges in the area, including UNC Greensboro and North Carolina A&T, that provide sports options and lots of young people to keep things fresh.

I’m sure it’s not all peaches and cream, but my visit was very impressive. I wouldn’t mind a bit if I found out I was moving there.

Having grown up and lived in Ohio for about 30 years of my 65 years I can tell you the Winters are very depressing due to a lack of sunshine, which is why the people aren't real friendly and if you're not from the area you'll struggle to fit in. Also, if you cheap land try 25 miles north of Columbus (Mt. Gilead) and the surrounding area. Pick NC.

Traveled a ton and know all well.
Columbus and the only thing that would bring Greensboro in is milder winters.
Columbus is a pretty big city that doesn’t feel like it.
