So I've been called to jury duty and have had two summons that was pushed out. The first time I had Covid, and the second time I pulled a muscle in my leg and could not walk. Now I am up for the third time. I am starting a new job and have a Zoom training with a pre-arranged consultant that as a senior manager, I can not miss. I've asked for a different date, and am waiting for a response via email.

If I miss what's the penalty? Do they haul you off to jail?

Go up there, make some racist remarks, they'll dismiss you, and likely never call you again. It worked for my old man thirty years ago.

Possibly jail, but more likely a fine, depending on the jurisdiction. Easy way to handle it is to suggest to the court a time period that you know you will be available for jury duty and request that you be allowed to fulfill your duty within that time period. That has worked for me in both Orange County, FL in 1998 and Gwinnett County, GA in 2017. Of course, I'm not certain that this is an option that could be accepted in other counties or parishes.

Last time I had jury duty at least a third were no shows. If the judge gets mad and decides to make an example he might send a deputy after you but there's safety in numbers.

I am suggesting a different day that week.

Oh, I am going with "only God can judge a man". I should be sent home fairly quickly.

Go up there the next morning at 8am and act like you are there for jury duty. After a little while you will all realize you are a day late and laugh about how disorganized you are....then you have to fill out a form stating why you missed and they put you back in rotation.

Too late, but how do they know you received it? Did it come by certified mail. USPS loses my mail all the time.

why don't you send the Zoom guy a copy of your summons and tell them to reschedule? Good chance the judge on whose jury you have to serve isn't going to give a shite about your new job.

It is illegal for them to hold jury duty against you.

I am one of 35 people on the Zoom meeting with a consultant who teaches businesses the EOS system of management. I am the General Manager, so I am sort of required to be there.

I don't think it would be that easy to reschedule.

You will be there about 7 hours before you ever get that chance, if at all. The administration portions last forever. Hell, last time I was in there they had just started the part where they ask folks questions. Only to discover that the defendants SISTER was in the jury pool telling all kinds of people about the case.

We all got to go home with a quickness

Well, since you already contacted them, you can’t say you never received it….

If they don’t change dates, you can be held in contempt of the court.

Also, you CAN miss your meeting. The company, whether you worked there 1 hour or 30 years, have to let you serve without penalty.

I’m sure if you explain the situation, as a senior manager should, they will be very understanding

Have them record it and send you a copy….

This is simple stuff for a Senior Manager, especially if you are 1 if 35 people on the zoom

Dave Letterman: Have you ever done jury duty?
Robin Williams: Yeah, I'm sure some lawyer wants me on a jury.

Yep I saw this happen. I got a summons and showed up and turns out it was a murder trial. There were a number of no shows and the judge called the deputy up there and told him to find these ppl and bring them in.
