Am I wrong to be nervous about the O-line?

We lost Armstead which is 12 games worth of an elite LT. Drafted Penning who by most accounts has a really high ceiling but needs work in the short-term.
Week 1 starters are probably something like this:
LT - Ram/Hurst
LG - Peat
C - McCoy
RG - Ruiz
RT - Ram/Hurst
Throckmorton/UDFAs backing up at guard. Penning backing up both tackle spots.
That guard situation is…. Not great. Peat is who he is at this point. Oft-injured, inconsistent, sometimes just flat out shitty. Ruiz hasn’t shown much at all to give me comfort but I think we just have to pray the light comes on for him.
Ram is obviously elite. McCoy and Hurst are above average I’d say.
I think this group is the X factor between us being a fringe playoff team vs a real contender. With Thomas and Olave in the mix plus Taysom at full time TE, our skill positions are upgraded bigly. If our guards can be just average and Penning can find his footing in the back half of the year I think this team can make a run.
This is the time of year when every fan convinces themselves their team is awesome, so just trying to take a step back and see where our weakest spot is now.

No, you are not. Even if Penning turns into a day 1 stud at LT, the depth is concerning.

Guard is a real problem. Hope I’m wrong but we still have needs: DT, 7th OL, LB, possibly RB (tough to know). I like our 1st round picks but I think we needed to keep more picks.

Penning will start, and I think he'll be fine.
The starters are good, its the backups that scare the ever-living sh*t out of me. But frankly, its been like this for years now.

There are a lot good guards on the market that can get us by for a few years

Hurst
Peat
McCoy
Ruiz
Ramczyk
Penning
Those are our top 6 O-Lineman. I'd really like a 7th.
As much as I'd like to sign Jarvis Landry...I think another OG is more important.

Penning is gonna block a DL straight into jameis’ knees just like he did with ridder

another solid guard would be nice.

Peat was injured reading this post...

We are solid. Hurst would do fine at Tackle until Penning is ready. He can also slide to guard when that does happen. You also have throck and Landon young that looked encouraging last year. We are in good shape

Throckmorton was complete arse last year. He was actually worse than Ruiz.
Landon Young was up & down, but I agree on him showing promise. Hopefully, he takes the next step this year.

Just pretend it’s the 35% of the games Armstead missed while he’s here
There’s 25 teams that would kill for our OL versatility and depth

An UDFA was worse than a #1 pick, GTFO

I guarantee you there were udfa's from other teams that were better than Ruiz last year.
Ruiz was pretty bad, but Throckmorton was in the running for the worst OG in the league.

I like the depth now. Hurst will either start or be your 6th guy at two spots.
To have hurst or ruiz as your sixth lineman is not bad depth.

Ram to LT, Penning to RT, Hurst to LG. That is how you fix this.
Or move Ram to LT, MCoy to LG, Ruiz to C where he belongs, Peat RG, Pen RT.

it depends on who gets hurt. If we have to use Throckmorton or Clapp again....

I only have doubt in the guards with Peat and Ruiz. McCoy is a solid center capable of being an All-Pro, and the OTs with Ramcyzk and now Penning taking the place of a former All-Pro seem like another solid duo. Ramcyzk will be an All-Pro also I believe. But they have got to do something about Peat, he's not the answer, I thought they would draft a guard in this draft. Ruiz is also on the hot seat this comin season imo, he hasn't lived up to the draft selection that he was.

Ruiz Hurst and Throckmorton played the most snaps on the offense last year. Now Ruiz and Throck were arse but you have to hope that that experience will help moving forward.
Hurst carried a 70 grade from PFF and had one of the top pass blocking grades in the league - played both tackle spots and can play both guard spots. Don’t be surprised if he gets extended here shortly.
We also have guys like Forest Lamp and Jerald Hawkins on the roster. Both have game experience and have been in the league awhile

This is the answer to the Ruiz question.
