LEAP testing is absurd

First, I understand the desire for state testing. Back in the 90s we had kids graduating at "valedictorian" and with 4.0 plus GPAs, from some NOLA schools, that could barely spell their own name and were needing college remedial classes.
I get we need some sort of standard way to verify that learning is actually occuring.
But my 8th grader today is on Day 4 of SIX days of testing. Yes, they break it up so they are not testing all day, but over the course of the 6 days, the total test time (not counting breaks, intro, etc) is 14 hours and 55 min... almost 15 hours.
ELA - 3 sections totaling 4 hours 20 min
Math - 3 sections totaling 4 hours
Science - 2 sections totaling 3 hours
Social Studies - 3 sections totaling 3 hours 35 min
I cannot recall a single college final exam lasting more than 3 hours.
Heck, the CPA exam lasts only 16 hours over four sections and you can take them at various times of the year, not all within a 6 day period.
The school took ELA and Math over the first three days... so she has had testing time of 8 hours and 20 min over the last three days.
As a kid... I remember taking the Stanford tests every year. I did not remember them taking that long. I just looked it up... they take between 2.5 and 5.5 hours.
This is absurd. Time to find another way.

Weren’t NOLA teachers recently busted for giving their kids the answers?

My 8th grader is as well but he's not sweating any of it. He's good at taking tests (subtle brag).

As a teacher, teaching/learning is over for us at this point in the school year. The next 4 weeks consist of nothing but testing. Especially at a school of over 2000 like I'm at.

I've taken the LA bar exam (24 hours) and TX bar exam (20 hours).
Tell your kid to buck up buckaroo.
For real though, testing sucks.

Are these the test that doesn't have anything to do with moving on to the next grade? If so, I remember we used to race to see who could fill out the scantrons the fastest.
This was known as "the test they give you just to see what you learned, there is no pass or fail" test.

Wait till you find out how long the ACT takes...oh the horror.
Some of the engineering finals had no time limit.
They're still at school and being challenged while gaining experience test taking (which is a major part of learning how to get through college). Think of it as free standardized test tutoring so they get more scholarships from higher ACT/SAT scores.

All three of my kids have had the same answer when I ask them how the LEAP testing is going - "Dad, they're so easy."
That's when I explain to them the differences between what's taught in EBR public schools and the school they attend.

They used to practice for LEAP for about 4 weeks beforehand, but now they teach to the LEAP all year long. All in an effort to improve the school’s letter grade, not to further the child’s education. It’s one of the reasons why we pulled our kids out of the public schools and went private. Their standardized testing now takes about 5 hours total and is spread over several days.

Adopt the Japanese model, turn these kids into robots that can dominate the world. Take the unable to adapt...and teach them a trade. Take the ones who can't learn a trade...and send them into mandatory military service. You either become productive, or you join the military. This country needs an enema.

Been giving LEAP/iLeap/Iowa/tons of other “benchmark” tests for years. There was a brief time, around 2010, that they were actually “high stakes”. If a kid scored unsatisfactory, they had to attend a month of summer school then retake the test.
So many parents complained about undue stress and anxiety that their kids were experiencing that the state department backed off. Now, the test means nothing at all to the students, but it’s still the main tool used to determine teacher and school effectiveness. It’s a joke.
We began LEAP testing this week, and I’ve had to continually wake up students who are sleeping during the test. Not when they’re finished with a session, but during the test. Yet this is what you want to base my job performance on?
Testing is way overdone, far too expensive, and scores are not accurate data. All we seem to do, though, is more testing.

Sorry your kid has to take a test, but people like you- people bitching- is why they’ve broken the test up into multiple days. Some whiny helicopter parent like you bitched about “poor Jaxon has to take a test all day long”. So they broke it up. And yet you’re still bitching. You and your kid need to suck it up. Taking a test everyday for a week isn’t the worst thing you or your kid will ever endure.
I think you’ve actually passed Slippy on the scale of whiniest poster on this board. All you do is bitch and complain. Even when it doesn’t personally effect you. Like now.

I loved testing because my brain is good at memory retention. It’s not good at public speaking or people skills though which are probably just as important.
It sucks that we use a standardized test to measure these kids’ success.

I see your lack of attention to the testing as a kid has led you to awful grammar and idiocy as an adult.
