Our TV viewing/marketing situation

A topic a little out of left field, but it is an off-day.
I think besides fixing our TV situation beyond Bally’s, the team needs to really press hard on expanding our fan footprint. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be marketing in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast heavily. That’s a market pull of over 3 million people of untapped potential. Start with organizing watch parties at bars even if you have to pay the bar to facilitate.
I was reading the Pelicans Reddit, and one fan went to the game last night and then drove back home to Shreveport. While that is an outlier, we should really be planting roots beyond the immediate metropolitan area. Winning helps, but I think there is more work that can be done.

I'm in the Lafayette area and you'd barely know the Pelicans exist.
Unlike the Saints, the Pelicans "footprint" doesn't seem to have expanded beyond the NOLA area to the rest of the southern part of the state.

The TV deal and access to watch the team play is a HUGE thing
Tons of fans had little or no access to regular games all year which is a crime in terms of building loyalty and a solid fan base
I know it was a bad situation and it’s supposedly getting rectified in the off-season but yeah .. that’s my #1 thing for the team BY far

NBA “reach” expands and contracts with winning and losing. It’s not like the NFL where teams have a pretty well defined sphere of influence.
the gulf coast has never had any NBA allegiance so there aren’t really any NBA fans to win over. It has to start from scratch with a real winner...long regular playoff runs.
think about the chasm between Houston up to St Louis, Memphis, across MS/AL to atlanta and northern Florida...no NBA presence at all
That’s an opportunity but also a long road to hoe

TBH the same could be said for NOLA prior to two weeks ago.

What networks carry NBA games should tell you a lot. Overall, interest in NBA has been declining for years. Fans are small % of population. Regardless, marketing is virtually non-existent.

I've always thought the same thing. They should be funding camps, watch parties, giving out merchandise at high school games, sending players to BR, Lafayette, Monroe, Shreveport, etc. The social media team finally is doing good work. There should be billboards and other ads in other places than the southshore as well. There were never commercials in BR when I lived there, that's just stupid. Imagine running a bus from Baton Rouge or Lafayette straight to SKC for every game so that there's more reason for fans who don't want to drive to be able to make it safely.

This, unfortunately, is very accurate. Lafayette is a huge Saints town, but the Pelicans haven’t translated. My boys and I went to the Spurs play in game and Game 3 and it seemed people around here were amazed we did it. I told them they had no idea what they were missing.

ESPN and Turner Sports are paying more than $2.5 Billion per year to broadcast NBA games. The deal is up in 2024-2025 and they expect to double or triple that amount on the next deal. That does tell us a lot.
Also, the ratings seem to be doing pretty well right now which is amazing considering all of the cord cutting. About 1/3 of the league is stuck with the terrible Bally Sports situation where it's really hard to watch legally.

According to Nielsen data compiled by the league, the opening weekend of the 2022 NBA Playoffs averaged 4.05 million viewers across ABC, ESPN and TNT. That's the NBA's best playoff opening weekend since 2011.

As for the OP's original question, the Pels contract with Sinclair ended this season and they are looking for a replacement because of how unavailable Bally's is to most fans.
quote:
“The team is entertaining all options as the goal is maximum access for our fans to consume Pelicans basketball over the air and online,” the Pelicans said in a statement. “We need to go where our fans are.”

They also need to go where the fans aren’t. That’s how you create fans. See TBS and WGN.

If you want to understand the disconnect, do this when you have a minute.
Pull up the Saints front office, executives. Marketing, communications, & relations teams, etc.
Do the same with the Pelicans in another screen.
Look at all the crossover

There are a few Pels fans on the Gulf coast but could be alot more. winning matters

If they became a consistent contender, I guarantee all the Laffy chain sports bars would have Pelicans gear in them.
No one gave a shite about the Saints outside of New Orleans until Hakim dropped the ball.

Mandela effect.
There really wasn't. Outside of New Orleans and Baton Rouge, you'd find more people in Louisiana claiming the Cowboys in the 90's.
Wins drive everything.

Agreed, but winning, and the way this team plays will help a lot. It was hard to watch that trash that SVG put out.

Was going to post essentially this. One of the biggest problems that we have is that they still haven't extricated themselves from the Saints and they will always play second fiddle. They need their own dedicated staff. It has actually gotten better, but still a long way to go.

What's really pathetic is when the Pelicans are "away" as in the Clippers, the Pelicans game is still blacked out.
That's bs. That's why I don't watch the Pels, because the TV markets blocks me out.
And no, I'm not going to pay for League Pass. I love NBA, and I just watch whatever TNT and Espn put on.

quote:Well, you expanded "outside of New Orleans" to outside of "outside of New Orleans and Baton Rouge." I originally mentioned the Lafayette area. There was heavy Saints support in Acadiana prior to 2000.

But North Louisiana and other areas of the state may have been a different story.
