What would the harm be in replacing Thompson with Bianco?

Better D. Equal O. When your shortstop can’t make a routine field attempt or throw, it’s just time. It’s a mental issue. Putting Thompson out there is hurting Thompsons future. You know Thompson doesn’t want a ball to come near him right now.

Nowhere near same O. Bianco sucks at the plate. Period. And has no range at short

Thompson is an avg bat. And by far the worst SS in the sec. Screw range. You don’t need range to field a ball hit right at you.

Bianco is hitting below .200 for his career.

Thompson is NAD but Bianco is even worse. And that’s saying a lot.

Bianco was a .94% fielder his first season where he was relegated to the infield. He became a .99-% fielding last season where he played a lot of outfield. At no point has he played SS consistently. He is a second baseman. You’re looking at trading shite for more shite.

Bianco played CF and 2nd last year.

I’d take it if he can make the routine plays.

Thompson is awful, but this is wishful thinking. Fans routinely underrate range. Thompson gets to balls that Bianco wouldn’t. So yeah, Bianco would not be charged with an error, but the runner would still be safe at first. Also, Bianco has never shown he is as good at the plate as Thompson. Isn’t he around 200 for his LSU career?

So you want Hal Hughes with half the defense?

Hmm, Bianco was used in the infield before. Remember LAST YEAR? Thompson made a bad error in the eighth, that is true. He made a great play in the 6th, that is also true. We swept a pretty good Mizzou team. Even with the defensive warts, he’s still the best option.

True. Athletic ability is the measurable difference.

I never liked to bash Hughes, he had enough people doing that. But I think his defense was actually overrated.

That said, yeah. I’d take Hal Hughes defense right now.

How great of range does Thompson actually have? How often does he make a play that makes you say “damn not a lot of people could make that play”? On the other hand, how often does he do something that makes you say “damn most high school shortstops could make that play and he just fricked it up”

range doesn’t have to be great diving plays.
being able to cover 1-2 extra steps in either direction gives you the ability to make a play look routine that another guy may be diving to reach.

an outfield example is Jim Edmonds vs Andruw Jones.
Edmunds was in SportsCenter seemingly every night making diving catches. Andruw Jones made those same plays still on his feet.

one made you say “wow”, but the boring looking guy actually had more range.

Yep. Said that. He played a lot of outfield which raised his fielding percentage. He was a very good outfielder.
My point is he has not played SS. When he played mostly infield, his fielding percentage was low.
