This could be an honorable mention. Same for Ohio State's 1998 loss to Michigan State. I didn't put them on the list due to both programs having recent titles, which eases the pain IMO. However, the 2012 SECCG is definitely higher on the pain index than the 2017 NCG due to Richt never getting over the hump. Same thing for Ohio State's 1998 Michigan State loss compared to others (2006 Florida, 2015 Michigan State, 2019 Clemson, etc.).
1998 vs Michigan State was brutal because we hadn't really sniffed a title since 1970 (doesn't count even though Ohio State recognizes it).
We were full on Joe Biden sniffing titles in the 90s and couldn't get over the hump.

1. West Virginia 9 vs. Pittsburgh 13 (2007)
You all know the story. All West Virginia needed to do was beat 4-7, 28-point underdog Pitt to play a beatable Ohio State team to win their first national title. Pat McAfee missed 2 chip-shot field goals, Pat McAfee injured his thumb, and West Virginia's vaunted triple option could never get going. They haven't been the same since. This video perfectly sums up the worst loss any CFB team has ever suffered.
Holy Shite I finally figured out the most idiotic reason why Pat McAfee is always shitting on LSU Football. He's still bitter that LSU won the natty in 2007. Sorry you couldn't make 2 field goals inside 35 yds Pat

I assume OP meant Pat White injured his thumb?

The answer has to be WVU. Losing at home to your archrival (with a terrible record btw) to prevent you from playing for a title is the stuff of nightmares.

Pitt almost literally played perfect defense that day. WVU's offense was based on getting one on one matchups in space and trusting that White, Slaton, and Devine would make someone miss to create a big play. It seemed like Pitt didn't miss a tackle in that entire game. That WVU offense being held to a single touchdown (Pitt ran out of end zone for a safety as time expired) by a miserable Pitt team is maybe the most shocking thing I have ever seen in a college football game. It would have been slightly less surprising if Pitt had won something like 34-31.

Here are some honorable mentions. I may add more as they come to mind. These programs have recent titles to ease the pain, but the losses were unbearable for their fans at the time:
Ohio State 24 vs. Michigan State (1998)
Ohio State is a blue blood, but they hadn't won a title in 30 years at this point. John Cooper had many great teams that fell short throughout the 90s, but this was his best one. The wire-to-wire #1, Ohio State was favored by 28 against a 4-4 Michigan State team. They got out to a 24-9 lead, but momentum shifted once a shanked punt by Michigan State hit Nate Clements in the back and the Spartans recovered. Ohio State completely unraveled after that, their last-minute drive to salvage the game ending in an interception. It was so bad it made Neutron Man cry.
Georgia 28 vs. Alabama 32 (2012/SEC Championship Game)
Basically the real national championship game that year as Georgia would've crushed Notre Dame just like Alabama did. This art sums it up. Georgia was up 21-10, but Alabama came back to take a 32-28 lead. Aaron Murray led Georgia on a last-minute drive. It seemed like Georgia would get a last-second TD, but Chris Conley caught a tipped pass inbounds and the clock ran out. This was Mark Richt's best chance at a national championship.

Pitt shoved 9 people in the box and Rich Rod was too stubborn to change things up. Then compound that with opponent having a terrible record so the guys were overconfident, MCafee missing 2 kicks he almost never missed, then Pat White being injured and out for about a quarter.

As a teenager I felt bad for Carolina fans. It wasn't a bad loss it was a beat down.

The 1st kick was a 19-yarder from the left hash. WVU intentionally took a delay of game penalty to get a better angle for the kick, but Pitt declined it.

Stealing a possession with a fake punt, dialing up the FG block that resulted in a touchdown, etc.
He threw the damn kitchen sink at Alabama that day and it almost worked.
Ogletree returning that blocked FG had me convinced it was time.

IMO the most heartbreak a CFB program can endure is to not be a perennial contender, be in the driver's seat for a spot in the title game, and blow it against a team they should've easily beaten.
Well for USC fans, that would be 2006 USC @ UCLA on Dec. 2.
But I'm sure USC fans would hold 4th and 2 in the 2006 Rose Bowl as the biggest heartbreak based on historic implications on the line, as Carroll said after the game..."we would've been the be all and end all." First team to ever accomplish the feat.

9. South Carolina 21 @ Navy 38 (1984) South Carolina came out of nowhere in 1984 and found themselves ranked #2 with only 2 games left in the regular season. They were in contact with Orange Bowl officials and were primed to play the Big 8 champion with the national title on the line. That is, until they traveled to Annapolis to play a 3-5-1 Navy team missing their star player Napoleon McCallum. They got destroyed.
This will always be the worst. It wasn’t even a close game
People forget we beat them in 82, 83, and 85. Just couldn't beat them when it mattered most in 84.

How is kick 6 not on this list?
Probably would be if Alabama had not won 3 of the previous 4 NCs and then won 3 of the next 7 NCs after it too.

Wonder how it would have been handled if you had an offensive lineman false start every time until they accepted the penalty?

#1 is App St. beating Michigan and it’s not even close.

Michigan lost at home to Oregon 39-7 the next week after Oregon took their foot off the gas at halftime. While embarrassing, that App State loss didn't really cost Michigan all that much.

Really surprised LSU vs Tenn 2001 isn’t on there. Arguably one of UTk’s best teams all time loses to a backup QB in the SEC championship game. That eliminated them from playing Miami in the NC game. Miami went on to blow out Nebraska for the natty
ETA- boston vol beat me to it

In 2014, TCU gave up 24 points and blew a 21 point lead in the 4Q against Baylor.
Only loss on the season was to #5 Baylor on the road. Finished 11-1 and was ranked #6 at the end of the season. Pretty harsh and 12-0 would have certainly secured them a spot in the playoff. Ohio State ended up jumping Baylor and TCU to take the #4 spot in the CFB playoff and then beat Alabama and Oregon to win it all.
