I remember going to Breakers games as a tyke. I didn't realize how minor league they were - I held them in the same regard that I held the Saints in, prolly cos the Superdome was just so mammoth.

I have no recollection of the USFL in their first time around. BUT I think they were on par with NFL teams and were directly competing with them. Hell the Breakers were probably better than the Saints back then.

Herschel Walker played from 1983 to 1985 during his career with the New Jersey Generals. Walker ran for 5,562 yards in his career on 1,143 attempts, scoring 54 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 130 passes for 1,484 yards and 7 receiving touchdowns..

Jim Kelly also played in the USFL.

Wouldn’t expect a stellar crowd for this first game, at least. Easter Sunday morning and it’s raining in Birmingham.

Shea Patterson is the starting QB for the Panthers
He is backed up by former NFL 1st round pick Paxton Lynch

I get that they had legit talent and that the NFL was still pretty raw back then but wouldn't the NFL have had more dominant offensive and defensive lines even back then?

Maybe should pick a city with a dome if you’re gonna play every game in one city

It was a good product and they had some wins head to head for players, and the league’s top tier players were top shelf, but maybe 1/3 of a team’s roster was NFL quality.

For example, Chuck Fusina, Cliff Stoudt and John Reaves were winning QBs in the league, and no NFL team would have started those guys. Kelvin Bryant was maybe the #2 RB in league history and he had a mediocre career with the Redskins after that.

I’ve watched a lot of poorly attended G5 and FCS games. I don’t think I’ve ever seen less fans than this excluding COVID restricted attendance.

Easter Sunday morning plus it’s been raining in Birmingham most of the morning.

Game was also delayed due to weather.

When players are trying to get a shot at the NFL they stand at attention with their hands over their hearts for the national anthem
