Me and my wife, are planning a trip in September. Would like to visit Costa Rica but are open to other destinations around the Caribbean. This will be our first time out of country. I think we are looking for an adult only place that is lively with good excursion options. Probably going to book through Costco if possible. 4-5 night trip.
Thanks for any help

I feel like we’ve done this thread a time or ten
All kidding aside. Sunset at the palms in negril ,Jamaica was fantastic. Little luxury treehouses. All inclusive. Adults only. Very peaceful , beautiful , and also not a bank breaker. Give it a google search and check it out.

From my own experience and from what I've read it is best to do all inclusive in areas that seem to specialize in all inclusive. It seems to be generally agreed that Jamaica and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico are the best for all inclusive. A family member of mine has been to all inclusive resorts in Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica. He loved Costa Rica but wouldn't do all inclusive there again.

I spent 10 days in Costa Rica, the last 3 of which were at an all inclusive. I can definitively say those 3 days were nowhere close to as fun as the other 7. If you're going to Costa Rica it would be a waste to spend it at an all inclusive. Yucatan would probably be best

What made the all inclusive so much less fun? Just the amount of activities to do or?

It wasn't that it was a bad experience. Costa Rica just has so much to offer off the resort. We rented a car and drove all over the country and experienced so much. The last 3 days at the resort almost felt like we were back in the US if it wouldnt have been for the nice views. Annoying Americans everywhere, mediocre food. It just wasn't the same experience that we got the previous 7 days traveling through the country. All inclusives have an appeal and certainly have their place, but if i was in Costa Rica I just feel that I would miss out on too much. Save the all inclusive for when you're in Cancun or Punta Cana.
CR is very safe, has a nice culture, good food, and many different unique regions. It's a place to get out and explore. All inclusives are better suited for when you just want to get away for a week to relax and not worry about having to do anything yourself.

Thanks a bunch. This is the info I needed to hear. Me and the wife are both 26. Very active and healthy. We will look into just airfare/resort. Seems like the best way to go is have your own transportation and explore. Find your food and drinks along the way. Sounds like a great time.

You want to go to Montezuma, where I linked those two resorts. The waterfalls out of town are epic. Cabo Blanco is an amazing park on the tip of the peninsula, and Mal Pais is a world class surfing community just above that.
It’s an amazing destination. No one is simply passing through.
Research the little town, it’s a beauty.

I second this post. I would add Santa Teresa in there too.

I’m reading how important it is to rent a vehicle in order to really explore different areas. How is driving in CR? Seems like it can be dangerous and confusing. I’ve also seen that’s it’s mandatory to have additional insurance on your rental vehicle. Seems like this can get expensive. Thoughts?

It was easy to drive in CR. Depending on where you go you may need AWD. I don't remember anything about additional insurance and don't remember it being terribly expensive for the week long rental.

Driving isn’t bad…but
My daughter and her friend rented a car that was underpowered and could not make it up a road in the mountains. Make sure you get something that will get you where you want to go.

San Jose is a mess but once you're out of there you'll be fine. Lots of CR is mountainous and depending on the time of year it may be rainy but if you've driven mountain roads before you should know what to expect. Just try to avoid driving through the mountains at night. If you're planning on road tripping in CR do a search on this board. Plenty of threads with good advice. I was 26 when I went as well

Nayara Springs (or Nayara Tented Camp if you have the budget).
Not an all-inclusive— so the food is really good!
In the Arenal area (rain forest). Do an activity in the morning: zip lining; canyoning; horseback riding; rafting; river cruise; etc. Afternoon’s at the pool or spa. Dinner on site or in town.
Perfection.
You don’t need a car. Taxi into town. Hotel shuttle from the airport.
4-5 nights is too short for multiple overnight stops.

Tango Mar looks interesting...but its a 3 or 4 hour ride from the airport right?
That seems like a lot no?
I'd say I'm looking for a place to land and then travel about an hour most?
Lurking in this thread as well because we have been looking into places for Feb 2023.... I can say just by searching that the earlier you book the better the price.
Early booking promos, winter promos, is what I have been coming across....

What airport are you flying into?
Nayara Springs looks awesome but damn it’s expensive.
We are looking at going in September this year and possibly booking through Costco. I’ve read that September is the rainy season but it’s allegedly not that bad on the North Pacific side, Quantacaste region.

I just looked in general.... gave me 2 airports.
1 in San Jose
1 in Liberia
was about 3-4 hours either aiport....I would assume because of the terrain and traveling between mountains etc.
We're open to where ever. I think we'll land on just somewhere where we can go relax/party and not venture outside of the resort. Haven't had that type of relaxing in awhile.

Yea, and I think your rental options may be better from the bigger city. The ferry from Puntarenus stops running at some point, you definitely want to make in your first day of travel.
It’s a true destination. Absolutely, unequivocally amazing. Super chill.
