Some of the responses here- Yikes .
I can only speak to my personal experience .. i have an older dog whom ive had pet insurance on for over 10 yrs.. it has saved me untold thousands of dollars.. ever since he was around 5 yrs old, my boy had had one problem or another , sometimes every year, sometimes every other year, sometimes every 6 months.. each time he’s needed an expensive surgery (i.e. $1200-$1500, but they can be more)- the insurance has covered roughly 90% of it.. not to mention all the other odds and ends theyve covered.. I’ve done the math, and if i had “self insured”, or paid out of pocket, i would have come out way, way behind…. btw the one i have is called Embrace and i got a slight discount since i get it thru USAA, which is a third party provider .
So i guess if you dont like saving money, then go ahead and call it a scam or whatever, makes no difference to me .

Last year I would have told you it was a sham. After spending 3k plus on my dog this year alone because he can’t stay away from precarious situations, wish I had it.

Our other dog tackled her when they were running and her foot got caught.
I guess that it was an impact injury and and not structural weakness helps the odds. Will still be harder on the other knee and higher risk now but not higher risk on top of already being a trouble spot

My lab has Addisons and gets a nearly $200 shot every month.
Probably not covered. Pet Insurance has tons of exclusions. Most Pet Insurance policies also do not cover genetic predispositions. Read the policy very carefully before you buy it.

You can guess which way that decision went.
Your dad sounds like a swell guy. I would do the same to him , when the time comes.

I’m just going to say it, some of you people are crazy. I’ve loved all my pets. But I’m not spending a year of my kids tuition to keep a freaking dog or cat alive unless I have money to burn.
That dog that loves you so much will love the guy that feeds him tomorrow just as much and would not miss your stupid face at all. I know that’s a hard pill to swallow but it’s fact.

I don’t understand what the cost of the pet has to do with the decision to insure it or not. I have pets that were strays, and others that cost me a lot of money, I don’t determine what kind of medical care they receive based on what the pet cost me.

It’s cheap as frick.
I mocked my wife on this purchase.
My buddy climbed a chain link fence and ripped a hole in his stomach. I could peer inside. It’s weird. You think it’d be a view of guts and inner dog working. Largely cavernous. Thought he was dead.
Nope. Done. No prob.
He blew out both his little dog Achilles tenders.
Surgery. Water tank physically therapy. (They walk his dumbass in a water tank treadmill with a current?)
He’s basically bionic dog at this point.
His hind legs are worth two base model Chevy Silverado’s. He’s fast as crap.
Dude is faster now than he was.
He almost got me sued bc he murdered the neighbors cat on her porch.
It’s cheap.
You need to hit up Healthy Paws.
Two leg surgeries. Heart worms. Ripped stomachs open. fricked himself up jumping out of the truck to (1st time): chase critter (2nd time): go poop
He’s nuts man.
I don’t have a high end dog. I just love the silly motherfricker. Because he’s awesome.
I think we are at like $32/month? Again this is my wife’s game.

Look them up. Dogs are silly

Had it for my labs while they were young since they have to get so many shots and then to help cover the spay or neuter costs. Dropped it now since they basically only need the annual shots and are in good shape.

Most cancer isn't even about the money for me. My dog was sick whenever my vets dog was going through chemo, so I got to see it every couple of days. I don't think I could do that to an animal unable to understand I'm trying to save it's life and consent to it.
