Top 3 X's and O's HC's at LSU(Football)

Going back to Charlie Mac. I think it would be fair to say that Kelly immediately jumps into Top 3. I would put my top 3 as: Saban, Kelly, Arnsbarger. That's really amazing considering we've had 10 different coaches since Mac and Kelly hasn't coached a down in a game for LSU. Teaching schemes starts with teaching kids how to prepare mentally and physically to handle the load. I love the complete approach that this staff, under Kelly, is implementing to get these guys ready to execute the game plan in the fall. It's going to be awesome to have a coaching staff again that may actually win 2-3 games a year that were due to superior coaching/scheming and adjusting.

Mac was the finest defensive mind in LSU history.

I'd say probably Mulkey #1, Saban #2.
All the other ones seemed to focus on recruiting and motivation.

I think Arnsbarger was ahead of his time. I wouldn't disagree with him being #2 on the list. It will really be hard to determine coaching impact from modern-day coaches vs. guys of his era. CFB has such a completely different landscape now.

If you're just talking football since Mac, the other candidates are O, Miles, Dinardo, Hallman, Archer, and Stovall. You're not really going out on a limb with your top 3.

Mac was legit for his day, but coaching defense scheming for a 75/25 run/pass ratio was ALOT easier.

arnsparger hardly ever blitzed in those days either.
different time.
we were not facing fun n gun offenses or air raid

I've heard from guys that played under both skip and smoke that Smoke was a fairly better tactical coach than Skip. Just couldn't manage a team.

Right...that was the point. It's amazing the lack of skilled tacticians that have actually coached this program in the past vs how much winning we've done.

Lol.
I wasn’t rating him number one or two or anywhere.
I was pointing out his name is spelled “Arnsparger,” not “Arnsbarger.”

Oh I didn't realize you were taking the time to spell check my post vs actually weighing in on the topic. Sorry...i'll do better.

Saban certainly knows Defense but wouldn’t say he’s an Xs and Os guy on offense.

IMO Saban is/was excellent on defensive Xs and Os. Whatever Saban weaknesses are in Xs and Os he makes up for it on the recruiting trial and assistant coaches.
Winning on the recruiting trail = my guy will straight beat your guy 9 out of 10 times regardless of scheme.
Assistant coaches are to fill in my (Saban) knowledge gap which is not much.
