I'll be moving back to BR soon for grad school at Our Lady of the Lake and I am looking to rent an apartment/townhome in a safe area, which I have been told by many is only in the Prairieville/Gonzales area. However, the traffic issues I remember from when I was in undergrad at LSU still haunts me. Is it worth it to drive from the Prairieville/Gonzazles areas or should I look for something closer?

Safety is a top priority for me when looking for a place to live. I hate the feeling of having to look over my shoulder when walking out to my car.

But damn that traffic is my least favorite thing about moving back to BR.

Why not just stay near OLOL?

Plenty of safe neighborhoods in south Baton Rouge and St. George.

Just don’t get too far off of the interstate exits and you are fine.

There are no safe areas in Baton Rouge. Move to Gonzales or Prairieville where your less (only slightly less) likely to die. Welcome back

You've been misinformed by a bunch of Karens and people with political disagreements with EBR.

I would absolutely not put myself into a position to rely on I-10 every day if I didn't have to. And there are plenty of safe, affordable areas still that are an easy drive to the bitch by the ditch (Our Lady of the Lake).

The expansion of I-10 from the Geismar exit has really helped the interstate traffic for the most part. The surface street traffic in AP is the main headache. There's not many apartment complexes in Ascension though. The one's closer to Hwy 30 are mostly packed with construction workers. If you're a single man, I'd look closer to campus, but you're post seems to think that's too dangerous. The only real selling point to put up with AP traffic and housing costs are the school districts, and it doesn't sound like that's a factor for you.

Plenty of areas around the hospital that are perfectly fine. The commute to BR is probably more dangerous than the good areas you could live in.

So why not choose one of the safe neighborhoods near where you will be working/studying?

Would these by chance be realtors that operate in Ascension Parish?

GF does it now. She bitches about the traffic but it's really not bad. You just check your traffic app before you get on 10 in the mornings and when leaving OLOL. If it sucks, take Perkins/Bluff/30/etc It's seriously only bad between there now if there's an accident. I-10 widened to 3 lanes out to 73 and actually helped alot. The pecue interchange will be nice as well when that's finally frickin done.

TLDR it's not bad between 73 and Essen unless an accident.

ETA: You do need to avoid Dutchtown High Traffic during school year.
Go through there before 645 am or after 745 am. And before 245pm or after 4pm.

Absolutely look for something closer. Housing gets more expensive in that area, but there are still plenty of options.

If you are going to grad school, you won't have time to burn 2 hours a day in traffic, and you will be expected to be on time every day. Look off Suma, Perkins, or Jefferson. Basically look in south East Baton Rouge as close to the hospital as you can.

I sincerely wouldn't move to Ascension Parish unless I really needed good public schools. It doesn't sound like you are in that stage in life right now.

From Prairieville in the morning is not too bad. Afternoons suck. From downtown to Prairieville where we lived is about 20 miles. A 45 to 60 minute drive is not uncommon, especially if some assclown decides to go full Bo/Luke Duke on I-10.
There were some 90 minute drivetimes as well.
Moving back to BR has made our lives easier.

Yes, just get a place near Perkins/Bluebonnet. Although, I think there was a shooting at Oakleigh recently

Just get an apartment off Summa or further up Essen or Bluebonnet. Why drive further than you have to?

Not worth it. You don't want that commute while you're in school. Pick someplace reasonably close by save the headache.

Plus your biggest risk of not being safe is while you're at work/school/parking lot etc being at OLOL, not your house.
