I love reading the “top x courses in x city” threads as they spiral out of control and I always wonder how others go about ranking them?

For me, challenging layout/elements will often trump course conditions. Beaver is always in great shape but it’s such a simple layout, I.e. make decent shots and you’ll put up a good score.

So, how do you all rank/rate courses?

I honestly would rank condition higher. I don't care how great the course layout is if the greens are shite and you can't make putts or the fairway is full of divots it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. That being said, I am much more likely to give place multiple chances to get it right if I like the layout. If I had to come up with some "criteria" it would be like 1a. condition 1b. layout 2. scenery 3. Misc (range, bar, food etc)

Conditions and scenery way more than layout for me.

Honestly I’m a pretty avid and decent golfer, play a lot, single digit handicap, etc…. I don’t really understand what people mean by layout. Yes obviously forced carry’s number of par 3/5, but unless it’s some kind of weird layout like Greystone I don’t know how much I even notice

BBCC has none of that. But the burger is good and the beer is cold. And there is a game every day

This is perhaps my most important. Have you played Squire Creek? Beautiful course and wide open but the green complexes are ridiculously difficult.

Conditions are first

Secondly, I do kind of judge a course by its pro shop. Both in ball/equipment selections and apparel. Love a course with a great logo and various brands of polos.

1-course conditions with most emphasis on green conditions and consistency

2a-Layout/Architecture-specifically, variety of holes with strategic differences requiring use of all clubs in the bag. Nothing worse than all par threes playing same distance or all other holes being Driver, 8/9i over and over. I also enjoy courses that are designed where many holes seem or appear isolated from the other holes on the course.

2b-Course beauty/scenery is related to the layout and architecture, in my opinion, due to the designer maximizing views and special features of the land.

3-practice area/range

4-hospitatlity

5-pro shop

I like courses that make you think your way around the course.

A course should make you use every club in your bag.

Deerwood and Riverbend are good examples in the Houston area.

I dislike courses that have green complexes that severely penalize because the designer got lazy.

I have this discussion with my group of friends all the time. We’ve got a bunch of 15-20 handicappers who play from the forward tees and debate the difficulty of courses. It always cracks me up.

I rate a course on the greens, condition, and amenities. I’m not on tour just keep the place looking good and the beer cold.

I tend to rate a course based on two things; turf conditions and does it have "fun" or " "memorable:" holes. You know you liked a course if you can remember several of the holes months later. Greens fall under turf conditions but that also encompasses fairways, areas around the green, etc.
