re: Yet another reason why this vet doesn't do the VA....

I'm not a vet but I have done some legal work with vets and the VA
My takeaway was that the VA is a typical, mismanaged bureaucratic institution capable of egregious errors and with government inefficiency in everything - including hiring. BUT, there are also some absolute passionate and diligent medical professionals who believe in the mission and can deliver outstanding care when the mechanisms of the institution aren't in their way. It's like public schools, for example.
Which likely explains why there is a subset of vets who've had an excellent experience and would never go anywhere else (my uncle was like this).

WTF did he think was going to happen lol? Idiot. The VA has alot of problems, but this isn't the best example of VA incompetence. Was the expectation that they would go out and raid his car and confiscate his firearms or something? They don't have the authority to do that. It is noted that he didn't shoot himself also. This doesn't discredit the VA, it discredits him.

Technically they could have, right? My local clinic has a “no weapons allowed on premises” sign. I pretend I don’t see it when I have to go there.

I was going to say, I don’t have that authority in private practice either. That pesky Second Amendment.

My family member is a vet who extensively uses the VA system. Some places were horrible. My family member drives little further now to a different VA hospital and can’t be happier. It sucks that there isn’t a level of consistency across the system.

Thats a separate law enforcement issue though that has nothing to do with his alleged suicidal tendencies.
Also, if he had the presence of mind to not want possession of the gun, why didn't he just get rid of it? He needed it taken from him for a big dramatic story and a soapbox to preach it from? frick that guy. How much you want to bet this jackass never left the chow hall in country?

I have NEVER had a good experience with the VA (ten year vet here)

It is appalling how little we ,as a country, are able to help veterans that come back after service with mental health challenges. The VA was great for my father to get glasses, his teeth cleaned etc... But any surgery - hell no. He had the means ( insurance from work) but countless don't. All the money the government pisses off on bullshite both here and abroad and we can't take care of the people that suffer for putting their life on line is in fricking believable.

I need to get my DD214 for a background check for a job. I was told it would be possibly weeks until it came in. Just how in the everloving frick does something like that take more than 1 day until it comes in??? Furthermore, why in the frick do I have to put in a FOIA request for my own fricking paperwork?

The VA doesn't maintain your DD 214. It's something you shouldn't have lost in the first place. DD 214 for active duty (that and NGB 22 and discharge orders if NG/USAR) are YOUR responsibility.

Have you contacted your senator or congressman for help. They cut through a lot of red tape for my son. Hope they can help and thank you for your service.

They need to scrap the VA and just make it insurance to use at any medical facility.
That briefs well but do you think non VA facilities will be more compassionate or take better care of Veterans? They won't.
