Computer Science graduate find first full time job.

My son graduated last year with a degree in computer science and is having a hard time finding a full time job. He has worked some contract work, but nothing permanent.
A few full time prospects seemed to disappear.
Does anyone have hints on whom contact to help with his search? He needs some guidance. What he is doing is obviously not working. Is it more about who you know than what you know?

Where did he graduate?
What city/metro area is he focusing on?
What programing language does he have experience with?

Yes, a lot is who you know. If he codes, what languages? If he has a portfolio, he should host a site to show his abilities. Start with an internship, if it’s a fit it will almost always turn into a entry-level job.
ETA: He should know his audience before the interview and know if they are technical enough to know what his abilities are without seeing a GUI, if he’s a front-end dev and can’t show that, then definitely start with an internship.

Where did he graduate?
Louisiana Lafayette. Degree in Informatics.
What city/metro area is he focusing on?
SE Louisiana
But open to others.
What programing language does he have experience with?
Have to follow up on that one.

It's pretty difficult to get your foot in the door. I worked for the company I'm at for 12 years. Got my degree at the 11th year and it took me a year to get an opportunity. I was job shadowing our network architect for a year before they gave me a shot.
It's a tough pill to swallow, but I see a lot of developers take a support type of role and prove their technical worth.
What specifically does he want to do? Security? Dev? Networking? Help Desk? Production Support?
Certs definitely help but I kept running into an experience deficiency. Hard to get experience, when you can't get a job that gives you experience.

An internship is built into the curriculum, but with Covid, those were cancelled. He has done contract work locally, but nothing has panned out.

Tell your son to start taking coding classes and get certified in either Amazon or Microsoft cloud services.
If he can get certified in either on of those, he will find very steady work. Shouldn't be a hard to do with his computer science background.

I think Infomatics is like an ISDS degree at LSU, which isn't really computer science so much. But it's a flexible degree and valuable.
IBM is hiring developers in Baton Rouge. Depends on his experience and his salary expectations. As others have pointed out, computer science is very broad. He might have experience in one area when everyone is demanding something else.
Also check out these people, they are trying to staff new offices in Baton Rouge and Mobile. They seem to even offer some training on the job too.

Next step is also to look at the local/regional banks and service companies like Iberia, Cap One, Hibernia, Associated Grocers, Brown and Root, Epic, etc.
If he's willing to move, try Accenture or Capgemini.

Have him apply to capital one as an intern. He will get experience and get a great tech company on his resume.
Also have him build a portfolio on github. Tons of projects he can do. I am also looking for contributors for a couple of opensource projects that will get him a portfolio.
Have him start contributing to github projects
Like someone else said, if you can’t get a job in the market, he is doing something wrong

A "degree in computer science" could mean so many different things. What experience does he have? Any certifications? Any programming experience? Knowledge of Windows Server/Azure/AWS? Has he looked at a firewall?
Sounds like he needs to find him a help desk job to get his foot in the door, then find a specialty he can stand more than the others, and focus on that. Get his A+, Network+, possibly Security+ from CompTIA to beef up his resume.

That was usually the case, but the internships were cancelled during covid.

His contract work has mainly been help desk type stuff. He has worked mainly with hospitals.

Is this considered the same as:

?
Informatics sounds more like an ISDS degree.
Either way, tell him to consider being a plant operator and living a happy life.

Is he open to furthering his education?
LSU has an accelerated Masters of Data Analytics program that can be completed in on calendar year(Starts in June and ends in May). I know lots of people who have done this and they all landed solid jobs. At the very least they received job offers from Big 4 accounting firms. Some of the better offers included Exxon, Chevron, and high end consulting firms.
