I'm about to close on a house and it has a roughly 1/2 acre pond. I'm worried if I use a weedeater around it all the weeds will just fall into the pond and that could cause problems later and I obviously don't want to use round up. I thought I might be able to get in a small boat and spray towards the bank but some of the round up will probably still get in the pond.

Any suggestions?

Why? I’ve used Roundup on a lot of small ponds and never killed anything other than grass (if you’re worried about the ecosystem of the pond).

I wouldn't use much if any grass killer I think you'll get erosion issues at least we did and now I just use a string trimmer but it remains mostly tall along the edges since ours is in the woods not near a house.

The erosion issue from the Roundup would be my main concern. But I’d still spray it as
Opposed to using a string trimmer. Mix it light and go to town.

Thats what I was worried about. The erosion also like someone else mentioned.

Plant natives around it and don't keep it landscaped. I had button bush around a large part of mine. Was great for attracting insects which would fall in the water and feed the bream. Some people don't like jewelweed, but it grows well around ponds and is a great food source for hummingbirds during the fall migration. Strawberry bush does well around ponds too, but if you have deer they won't last.

Don’t use Roundup around a pond.Herbicide Rodeo is recommended around ponds,it is glyphosate without the surfactant.Roundup is glyphosate with surfactant. The surfactant is what is harmful to fish not the glyphosate.

We have a pond that takes me a solid hour to do with the weed eater. There are some products, Tsunami I believe, that are safe for aquatic life but will kill the grass around the edges.

I personally do not use any weed killer due to erosion issues and appearance.

My pond is big enough that some grass getting into the water doesn't hurt anything. If you can get a hedge trimmer with a 90 degree head and put it perpendicular to the ground, it works like a sickle bar mower and won't throw the grass into the pond. If you have a side sickle bar mower then there is your best answer.

Stock your pond with two STERILE grass carp and weed eat to your heart's content. The grass carp will devour any grass that gets thrown into the pond. Worked very well for me.

Previous owner said he added a grass carp a while ago and assumed it was still in there. He said he always edged around it and never had a problem. I'm probably over thinking this. HAHA

I use a push mower around mine. I think it is easier than a weed eater and it doesn’t throw much grass into the pond

It is. I'm talking about right up next to the water. I'm on a zero turn so can only get so close.

Cut weeds falling in the water won't hurt anything, you are overthinking this.

Why not buy a cheap lawn mower just for this? That's why I'd do. Get one that throws it to the side and only mow one direction your first row or two.

If mowing is an option that's a hell of a lot faster than weed eating. Well worth a $100 mower IMO.
