I have turkeys on my land but not enough to hunt this year at least. I’m going to try and take as many coyotes, bobcat and raccoons as I can then I’ll hopefully have a population that I can hunt.

You only have one Tom or Jake? If there’s multiple males around that’s all you need to hunt them? Or hunt late season after the hens have been bred already.

I have hunted Kisatchie some. Problem is there are lots of hunters in areas where I found Toms.

It makes sense. You just gotta get there first. I personally haven’t ran into many hunters where I’m at.

There wasn’t a gobble to be heard in Fort Polk this morning. I was surprised.

My Dad lives in Greene County, Tenn. He has sent me a ton of pictures and said they are seeing 50+ at a time right now. Our plan is to be in Tensas, La for Opening weekend here, then go to Tennessee the first weekend of May.

Went ti my new land with a buddy who has hunted turkey for years. We were in a hardwood flat between the creek, the overgrown cutover and a neighbors hardwood bottom. Heard a couple wake up gobbles, then hens started flying in
And landing in tall trees. A few hens flew down to see what the calls were. Thep only "popped" a few times. Surrounded by hens in the trees til about 9:30, no gobblers came. The hens all eventually flew off to another neighbors pasture.

Never heard gobbles except at pre-dawn in the trees.

Anybody ever had the hens stay up high going tree to tree? My buddy says it means they havent started mating yet.

Later we took a ride and saw the turkeys in the pasture, but my buddy wanted to be all responsible and not trespass because we were in his truck.

Assuming you are in Mississippi. They are still in big groups with hens. MS is the last state in the region that opens up before peak nesting begins. I would imagine that will be changed in the next year or two as their population is in decline

Yes, southeast MS. Didn't seem to be a population problem here, just a gobbler/hunter problem.

There were lots of tracks on my semi open hilltops. These are not nice pastures, but areas where the forest regeneration is way slower than the rest of the property. Thinking of setting up there hoping the open hilltops could be better flydown zones than the woods.
