Maybe this was already posted, but the world's largest plane was destroyed this week in the battle at Gostomel airport in Kyiv.
Buddy of mine used to charter this thing for clients, and I have seen it at IAH many times.
Truly the end of an era.

Antonov Design Bureau in Ukraine based the An-225 design on its predecessor, the An-124. While the An-124 cargo jet had four engines, Mriya was destined for bigger tasks such as carrying the Soviet Space Shuttle named Buran, and was equipped with six Ivchenko Progress D-18T turbofan engines.
Measuring 275 feet long, the An-225 became the biggest cargo plane thanks to its 290-feet wingspan. Each of the engines under the wings was capable of producing 51,600 pounds of thrust during takeoff.
Built in the Soviet era, the An-225 was the only aircraft of its kind to be completed; and after the Soviet Union collapsed, it was purchased by Antonov and used as a cargo carrier capable of ferrying monstrous-sized equipment like steam generators and power transformers. In 2010, it recorded a historic achievement after transporting two 138-feet wind turbines, the longest pieces of air cargo ever, from China to Denmark.

It was in the James Bond movie, Casino Royale.

what do you do with a plane that has outlived its usefulness and too big to sell? you have an accident that lets you right off the loss

Flying a 6 engine plane to deliver two wind turbines doesn’t sound very green to me

It should have been moved out of region before Russia attacked.

There have been special cargos (size, shape) that this plane was frequently used for.

You have no idea what you are talking about. This plane offered one-of-a-kind carrying capabilities. It is a true loss to the heavy transport industry. It was in for maintenance and they couldn't fly it out of the way.

It’s far from outlived it’s usefulness.
My company uses it (well, used it) to ship subsea trees and manifolds.

Was used in O&G regularly.
About 10 years ago, we were supplying heavy equipment to build a pipeline from the PNG highlands to an LNG plant on the coast. One of the projects was to build a new airport up there. Took like 3 years and an unbelievable amount of dirt work.
The only reason the airport was built was to land the little sister to this plane (the 124) to finish the upstream and processing scope.

I read somewhere else that the engines were off of it for maintenance. I imagine it would have been difficult to get it together and out in time.
There's supposed to be a second one that wasn't finished that they say something about completing every so often. Maybe something will come of that.
