I guess science is driven by poll numbers. Or maybe the lockdowns and masks were bs and unnecessary.

When you design a reporting system to fabricate Covid hospitalizations and deaths, why would you think the fabrication of Covid hospitalizations and deaths would go away just because the virus waned?

Today they're weaning everybody off the Covid fear porn they created - just watch how it's happening. It started with re-definition of a hospitalization, and then how unvaxxed were reported differently than vaxxed were.
It's been BS from the start.

The change in tune right now is certainly entirely political in nature. The democrats are getting crushed in their internal polling and realize they’re going to get blasted in November if they don’t change something in a hurry. I suspect it’s too little too late though.
The biggest scientific takeaway from the numbers at present however is the complete and total dissociation of cases and deaths compared to earlier in the pandemic.
