Sunday Top 12 practice
Sunday practice was under much cooler conditions than qualifying will be, so practice performance might not be indicative of how qualifying will go.
The best lap speed is not that interesting, because you can trim it out for a fast first lap, but the challenge is maintaining a good pace for four laps.
Best Lap Speed
P01 234.042 Scott Dixon (Ganassi / Honda)
P02 233.624 Ed Carpenter (Carpenter / Chevy)
P03 233.597 Rinus VeeKay (Carpenter / Chevy)
P04 233.441 Takuma Sato (Coyne / Honda)
P05 233.440 Jimmie Johnson [R] (Ganassi / Honda)
P06 233.355 Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi / Honda)
P07 233.106 Pato O'Ward (McLaren / Chevy)
P08 233.032 Tony Kanaan (Ganassi / Honda)
P09 233.016 Alex Palou (Ganassi / Honda)
P10 232.466 Will Power (Penske / Chevy)
P11 232.459 Romain Grosjean [R] (Andretti / Honda)
P12 232.321 Felix Rosenqvist (McLaren / Chevy)
Best 4-Lap Average
P01 233.774 Scott Dixon (Ganassi / Honda)
P02 233.283 Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi / Honda)
P03 233.261 Jimmie Johnson [R] (Ganassi / Honda)
P04 232.958 Ed Carpenter (Carpenter / Chevy)
P05 232.921 Pato O'Ward (McLaren / Chevy)
P06 232.763 Alex Palou (Ganassi / Honda)
P07 232.626 Rinus VeeKay (Carpenter / Chevy)
P08 232.070 Romain Grosjean [R] (Andretti / Honda)
P09 231.990 Will Power (Penske / Chevy)
P10 231.787 Felix Rosenqvist (McLaren / Chevy)
P11 229.991 Tony Kanaan (Ganassi / Honda)
P12 229.929 Takuma Sato (Coyne / Honda)
Ganassi had a monster practice. Will be interesting to see how that translates to the warmer qualifying conditions. Kanaan and Sato both had a terrible practice. Kanaan had a gremlin causing his steering wheel electronics to not work. He did a run but was ‘blind’ and was unable to use some tools. Sato couldn’t find a good setup and almost completely lost the rear end on one run.
The Top 12 shootout for pole starts at 4:00 pm ET on NBC.

Dixon is killing it. He should be our pole sitter when it's all said and done.

Jimmie with a lurid slide.

I really hate Leigh Diffey calling this race
It’s iffy if it’s Diffey

His real name "van Kalmthout" looks really hard to pronounce. Someone must have just started calling him "VK" at some point.

So the Fast Six is four Chip Ganassis (with two wins among them) vs two Ed Carpenters. Ed Carpenter cars are frequently very fast in Indy 500 qualifying, but they have yet to win the race. Regardless of who gets pole, a Ganassi car has to be the heavy favorite to win the race.

After the 12 cars qualify, reportedly the six cars moving on to the Fast 6 qualifying for pole will go out on track behind the pace car for two laps, to make sure the engines of all of the cars cool down before the Fast 6 attempt.
The goofy cool-down parade is happening now.

Love me some Ed Carpenter though
Ok, the top 2 coming up... this is going to be fun to watch
