Temperatures are way higher now than at the start. The Penske guys all drew bad numbers in the qualifying draw.

Sato's qualifying run has been invalidated for interfering with Marco's out lap. I've never seen that before. I don't know how they even overlapped. Sato must have gone really slow on his cool down lap.

Now that everyone has done their first run, the clouds have come back and the track is cooling. So there should be plenty of new attempts to get into the top 12.

They are expecting rain at 3:00 pm ET, so there's almost an hour and a half to get another qualy run in.

On Sato's 2nd run, he slammed the wall on his 2nd lap but kept his foot down and qualified 12th. It won't hold though. Someone will bump him from Sunday's Fast 12.

Saturday qualifying

We're still in a rain delay. Someone just tweeted that there has been no rain for the last 20 minutes. However, a heavy system is moving in quickly. No indication at this moment that the track will re-open for more qualy attempts. As of this moment, there is 2h 45m left for qualifying.

Edit: After a rain delay, the track opened up again with track temperatures 20° below the hottest part of the day, so speeds were expected to go up. Sage Karam completed a run and maintained his position, then Scott McLaughlin went out and his previous P15 turned into a P26. It was not looking good. Newgarden was obligated to go out because he had already given up his previous attempt. But during his run, the lightning came and closed the track. So Newgarden's previous time will be restored if the track does not re-open. Right now there is 1h 30m left but I think the rain/lightning are here to stay.

If the track does not re-open, this is the current chart:

The top 12 drivers (Rows 1 to 4) move on to the Sunday shootout for pole position.

P01 233.655 Rinus VeeKay (Carpenter / Chevy)
P02 233.037 Pato O'Ward (McLaren / Chevy)
P03 232.775 Felix Rosenqvist (McLaren / Chevy)
P04 232.774 Alex Palou (Ganassi / Honda)
P05 232.625 Tony Kanaan (Ganassi / Honda)
P06 232.398 Jimmie Johnson [R] (Ganassi / Honda)
P07 232.397 Ed Carpenter (Carpenter / Chevy)
P08 232.275 Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi / Honda)
P09 232.201 Romain Grosjean [R] (Andretti / Honda)
P10 232.151 Scott Dixon (Ganassi / Honda)
P11 231.842 Will Power (Penske / Chevy)
P12 231.708 Takuma Sato (Coyne / Honda)

P13 231.607 David Malukas [R] (Coyne / Honda)
P14 231.580 Josef Newgarden (Penske / Chevy)
P15 231.508 Santino Ferrucci (Dreyer & Reinbold / Chevy)
P16 231.275 Simon Pagenaud (Meyer Shank / Honda)
P17 231.112 JR Hildebrand (AJ Foyt / Chevy)
P18 230.999 Conor Daly (Carpenter / Chevy)
P19 230.961 Callum Ilott [R] (Juncos Hollinger / Chevy)
P20 230.812 Alexander Rossi (Andretti / Honda)

After a rain delay, the track opened up again with track temperatures 20° below the hottest part of the day, so speeds were expected to go up. But it did not go well.

Sage Karam completed a run and maintained his position, then Scott McLaughlin went out and his previous P15 turned into a P26. It was not looking good. Newgarden was obligated to go out because he had already given up his previous attempt. But during his run, the lightning came and closed the track. So Newgarden's previous P14 attempt will be restored if the track does not re-open. Right now there is 1h 20m left but I think the rain/lightning are here to stay.

Most of the guys in the fast 12 went early in the day when the track was cool. Alex Palou, Ed Carpenter, and Marcus Ericsson notably went out in the heat of the day and went fast, so they are looking good for tomorrow.

Ganassi, Carpenter, and McLaren are looking like the heavy favorites for the win now. Penske and Coyne have underperformed slightly from expectations, while Andretti and especially Rahal have greatly underperformed.

How has Johnson found the nerve and speed? I expect a Ganassi car to be up there but usually it’s Dixon. The Penske issues are strange.

Hoping the Andretti’s all have mechanical problems.

What has Marco ever done, except be born with the name 'Andretti'?

Nothing. My issue is how whiney the whole Andretti organization has become. The media wants an Andretti win so bad it seems and that irks me as well. I’m a Team Penske guy though so I’m jaded when it comes to Michael Marco and the band of merry idiots.

Andretti was supposedly interested in starting an F1 team, but it didn't get very far.
I was always a Mario fan. Thought Mike was talented, but as you say, a bit of a whiner.

Sunday practice and qualifying

Because there were exactly 33 entries, there is no “bump day” qualifying to determine the last row of the grid. Today is just practice and qualifying for the Top 12 cars from Saturday’s qualifying session.

12:30 - 2:00 pm ET - Top 12 Practice (Peacock)
4:00 pm ET - Top 12 Qualifying (NBC)
5:10 pm ET - Fast 6 Qualifying (NBC)

For the Top 12 qualifying, cars will go out in the reverse order of Saturday’s results. Here is the order of qualifying:

01 Takuma Sato (Coyne / Honda)
02 Will Power (Penske / Chevy)
03 Scott Dixon (Ganassi / Honda)
04 Romain Grosjean [R] (Andretti / Honda)
05 Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi / Honda)
06 Ed Carpenter (Carpenter / Chevy)
07 Jimmie Johnson [R] (Ganassi / Honda)
08 Tony Kanaan (Ganassi / Honda)
09 Alex Palou (Ganassi / Honda)
10 Felix Rosenqvist (McLaren / Chevy)
11 Pato O'Ward (McLaren / Chevy)
12 Rinus VeeKay (Carpenter / Chevy)

After the 12 cars qualify, reportedly the six cars moving on to the Fast 6 qualifying for pole will go out on track behind the pace car for two laps, to make sure the engines of all of the cars cool down before the Fast 6 attempt.
