Looking to get one.
I have a PC and a PS5 (I realize Horizon isn't on PC yet).

Elden ring is game of the year

Did you like Horizon Zero Dawn? If so, I would play Forbidden West first.

Completely different games. Do you want a story driven narrative game with fun combat, or do you want a difficult combat driven game with interesting lore?
I'm genuinely having a hard time wrapping my head around someone asking whether they should play Horizon Zero Dawn or Dark Souls with a straight face

Honestly, they don't sound that different, and I will play both. I'm just looking for advice and what the differences are.

Bruh...then don't respond. I'm not looking to cause you any confusion.

I think I would like both. They seemed like comparable games, but judging from the reactions, I guess I was wrong.

Horizon has constant dialogue and story. Elden ring is mostly just gameplay unless you do the optional character quests

I get this. Thank you for stating that simply.
Watching gameplay, it looks like you walk around an open world setting, fight things, pick up things, upgrade your character, make stuff to heal you......etc.

I think I would like to try Elden Ring, but then I see a streamer die to the same boss 40+ times, and it changes my mind.

This. I'm all in on Horizon and then I will decide if I am ready for Elden Ring. I've only played one souls game, Dark Souls Remastered on the switch, bought it on clearance at Walmart, spent a few days with it and sold it on eBay. But I'm still tempted by Elden Ring.

That’s it, yeah. I’ve been trying to decide between the two myself because I want to get one. For me, I’m not a huge fan of such large open world gameplays like Elden Ring. The gameplay, the lore, the visuals…everything looks incredible but I’ve just never been a fan of Souls games or open world games in general except for Red Dead and GTA V. But at least in those games, you don’t have to dig around for the story. Elden Ring definitely seems like the kind of game where you really have to follow what’s going on with all the open world side quests and pay close attention to the lore or you’re not going to get much out of the story, which is kind of the opposite of what I’m looking for. It’s mostly gameplay. Not as much on story.
As I’ve gotten older, gameplay has taken a backseat to story and how much fun I’m having and no doubt Elden Ring would be fun but it would also be incredibly frustrating because…well it’s a Souls game. It’s supposed to be challenging. It’s a game you can sink your teeth into and get lost in for a whole day. That’s just not my bag as a gamer anymore. Don’t get me wrong, shitty gameplay is a huge turnover but it doesn’t have to be super in depth either.
Forbidden West just looks like more up my alley as far as having cool enough gameplay to not be boring while also giving you a cool story. It sucks that I just don’t enjoy games like Elden Ring because it genuinely looks awesome but I know I’d trade it in for something else within a week without even getting that much time into it. So I guess it just kind of depends on what kind of game you’re into these days.

The only thing that confused me was that I opened this thread assuming you had at least done a little bit of research into what each game was. Once I realized I was mistaken on that point, I was no longer confused. Now that I understand that you wanted everyone to not only explain to you what each game offered, but intuit the types of games you enjoyed, I’m perfectly clear that this thread is useless.

This shouldn’t even be a question; Elden Ring by a mile.
Although personally I think you should play Demons Souls to Sekiro first so you really appreciate what a masterpiece this is.
