Consequence of diminishing quality? Lack of confidence in its products?

Can't hurt the shoe's feelings if it can't read the comments

Somebody posted a video from a cobbler on here the other day. He was saying a big problem is people are returning too many shoes for normal imperfections. So, it's going to lead to cheaper production methods and materials.

4 years ago I brought some AE shoes to a Cobbler instead of returning them to AE. They put on a much better sole and refinished them better than what AE had done in the past.

The best shoes they claimed were Aldens and worth the money.

You're just not going to convince me though to spend $500-750 on a pair of shoes.

I'll wear the $200 AE sale shoes until they croak and then find a new pair. The quality isn't what they used to be.

Like a lot of other mid to high-end products people that have no real frame of reference are bashing them.

People buy AE and have gotten the mistaken impression they are getting John Lobb bespoke quality for 1/10th the price.

Did they refinish them with JR (Joh. Rendenbach) soles? They are the go-to for most good cobblers and are excellent across their entire line.

I destroy my shoes, they never last long, but the Aldens I bought in college are still holding on.

I've never understood the point of product reviews on a company website. Were those real customer reviews to begin with?

Even on independent websites, I take any customer reviews with a huge grain of salt. So many people who write those are just looking for something - anything - to complain about to try to get a reaction from the company.

"Oh, the appetizer wasn't as large as you expected? Let us try to make it up to you."

People who are satisfied usually don't take the time to leave a review

I couldn't tell you. I tried looking up the place that did them but they seemed to have gone out of business. I don't see any visible markings on the sole but it was the best they offered at the time (2018).

It is possible to wear off the JR makings but they also may have been Gebruder Martin (Greman also) or Baker (English), neither one of them has markings and are similar quality to JR.

I think they recently closed shop. There was a run on their stuff by some of the industry folks.

They closed but a competitor came along and merged with JR so yes, the soles will still be available. AE and most top cobblers have an ample supply of JR soles.

There are other soles with the same quality, just JR and the name. Bedo's Leatherworks told me he wasn't worried as there were other soles just as good.

AE charges what you are going to see for a Goodyear welted shoe, stitched soles, good leather uppers, and leather stacked heels. Are they Aldens with steel shanks? No. Are they well made? yes. You're not getting shoes with those features for $125. Thursday boot touts its $200 price BUT it skimps on the cork layer, hence the "Thursday Drop" after six months.

AE's better shoes aren't $125 - more like $350-400. I switched to Alden because my toe caps kept getting hard creases in them (beyond what you would ordinarily expect in a shoe).

As I said, you are not going to see that type of construction for $200. JM"s Aristocraft line was $250-300 and that is with cheaper leathers.

PA's, Strands, Ffiths go for $350-400, you are right. However, they will knock the Fifth Avenues down to $250 during their sales. I've bought quite a few seconds and rarely can find the flaw. I'm not going to get upset over a little bit of loose grain near the back of the boot.

He's just saying you're not getting JM or CH with those features. The problem is that even though AE has climbed up in price over the last 10 years, there really isn't a great competitor that makes the amount of options AE does at the price point or even sub 500. So you're really looking at AE, perhaps seconds or on sale for low-mid 300s, then jumping to Alden at 550+

I have four pair of Allen Edmonds, that I have had more than 20 years. New soles, sole guards and taps every few years has kept them in amazing shape. The newer AE shoes, since they moved production to out of the US cannot stand up to the American made shoes.

There's a shoe store in Texas that will drops ship Alden shoes to me for $500 (at least that is what I hope since the last pair I bought early last year).
