Thanks. Great tips. I think we have 2 or 3 nights there. Haven’t book a hotel yet - no Marriotts. Any suggestions?

The tapestry is on our list along with D-day events. Other than that we were just going to explore.

I rented an air b n b in Bayeux---I wanted a kitchen since I planned to go to the local market. It's a pretty compact town, I assume you will have a car? I enjoyed the D-Day stuff far more than I ever imagined, and we didn't do an organized tour. Just motored along with a good guidebook, starting in Arromanche and heading west---did Longues sur Mer, Point du Hoc, Colleville sur Mer, the German cemetery, Omaha beach, all the way to Utah Beach and the famous church at St Mere Eglise. The museum at Utah Beach, in a former German bunker, is especially well done--some of the other little museums scattered around the area are a bit more "grandma's attic" than interpretive/explanatory. Get a GPS in your rental car & you'll do just fine. Lots of farm roads & side tracks, but they're all well listed in the GPS data.

One of the most touching stops was entirely by accident--we stumbled across the so-called "medic's church" in Angoville-au-Plain. Read more about it here: LINK

The town of Isigny sur Mer is home to the large dairy cooperative that makes the delicious Isigny butter, various cheeses, and salted butter caramels. The co-op has a big "outlet store" just off of the N13, which makes for a good pit stop & shopping for edible souvenirs. The big bags of salted butter caramels are cheap here & so dang tasty.

Lion d'Or and Hotel Reine Mathilde stick in my mind as nice looking places in Bayeux.

Bayeux

We went to Bayeux in April 2019 just a few weeks before the 75th anniversary of D-Day. We flew to Paris, spent a few days there at the Hotel de Seine in the 6th. That is a nice hotel just off Rue de Buci in the heart of the St. Germain district. We were staying there when Notre Dame caught on fire. I saw that from the beginning and posted about it on here that night. But I digress.

In Paris we rented a car and drove to Bayeux for 4 or 5 days, then drove back to Paris and stayed at the aforementioned Westin Vendomme , a Marriott property in the 1st arr.

It sounds like we took the same D-Day tour that Hungryone took because we went to all of those places. We took the all day tour with Overlord Tours which leaves early in the morning from downtown Bayeux and returns late in the afternoon. It was fantastic. I can't recommend it highly enough.

We stayed at Hotel d'Argoues in Bayeux, a wonderful little boutique hotel just a few blocks from the cathedral and Old Town.

The next day we drove to Mount St. Michel which was a very enjoyable day trip.

How long should we budget to visit Bayeux Tapestry? Is 1-2 hours enough?

Yes a couple of hours is more than enough time for the Tapestry Museum. You walk along a long U shaped glass case while the audio guide explains the panels to you.

If it is lunchtime and the weather is nice you can have lunch down the street at Le Moulin de la Galette where you can sit out on the patio overlooking the small river that runs through town.

May I ask what did you decide on? Did your trip take place at all? I have been thinking about traveling to France for a long time and choosing a hotel always creates a headache. This is my third attempt at planning a trip. The first two trips couldn't stand the covid, now I don't feel like going to Europe because of the war on the borders. I read this thread and realized that I was lucky with the place of residence. I can easily find a 5 star hotel near me. In Europe, it's not like that. And now I have no idea when it will be possible to start planning trips again...

6– St. Germaine/Monnaie

It felt like Paris’s equivalent of NYC’s West Village.

Great choice. I have stayed in that neighborhood three times including twice in 2019. Love it.

Depends what you want to be close to but the reality is you can get to anything via subway.

We typically stay in the 8th arm near Elysee Palace. There is a nice curio there that is kind of under the radar.

We are loyal to Marriott due to points so that did sway our selection.

We stayed in two different hotels and we were satisfied with both locations.

First night at Moxy Paris Bastille. We landed around 8:30am and didn’t want to plan much in case flights delayed. We landed on time, they held our bags and we walked to explore.

End of trip we spent 4 nights at Renaissance Paris Republique. Major Metro station a few steps away, decent restaurants, and overall pleasant experience.
