Heading to Costa Rica’s Peninsula Papagayo region in late May for 5 nights and wondering if anyone has any good recommendations? Staying at the Andaz. Thanks in advance!

We are looking at going to this same spot in June. I am also interested in recommendations.

Following as well, looks like a great points redemption. I've never pulled the trigger because of the lack of a great beach and I'm concerned it's a bit too isolated to get a real feel of CR for my first trip. Would love some insight.

You want isolated, but not that kind of isolated. Research into getting to and staying in the Montezuma and Mal Pais area. It’s remote and amazing. There are tons of amazing places in CR, but for your first trip the nutty accommodations, waterfalls, wildlife, hikes, beaches, and surfing around Montezuma/Mal Pais would be awesome.

To me, you're missing out on a lot by staying in one location in Costa Rica. So much to see and do. It's actually a very easy country to drive around and move from place to place. A lot of countries that could seem intimidating for a first trip, but CR is not one of them if you ask me.

You are right next to some really great fishing if that's your thing. Call Danny at costaricafishingcharters.net -- even if you don't fish he knows everything about the region/country. He's a BR local but splits his time between here and there.

Sure, but for us, that is exactly what we wanted. To have everything we wanted to do in one spot and not have a packed itinerary that included traveling around the country.
We wanted to chill, and that trip was awesome.
Besides, we can always go back and explore.

It's a great resort but you're kinda isolated out on the peninsula. I would recommend not renting a car and just book a couple of day trip tours if you want to go explore some. If you want to relax, don't leave the peninsula. There's plenty activities available at the resort and the food is great.

I appreciate all of the excellent suggestions! Who knows if I’ll ever get back to CR so I decided to book three nights at the andaz in the papagayo peninsula area and three nights in La fortuna. Now if anyone has anymore suggestions I’m all ears… La fortuna looks like a pretty incredible place.

Since my GF lives in CR I’m there constantly. I love La Fortuna. There is so much cool stuff to do. Just go on trip advisor and read the reviews, but Hot springs and hiking is great. Baldi Resort is a great commercial hot springs but there are others that are better that are more rustic and more Pura Vida. I love the whole country though- ticas ticas errywhere.
Apologies in advance for the 2-3 hours you will spend being herded like livestock at customs. Nothing in CR is efficient.

Thanks, yeah to me if I'm going to stay at a nice beach resort without exploring I might as well just pick Cancun AI since it's an easy direct flight from MSY and there are a million. In my head CR is more about exploring and culture so it's not worth the connection + drive from airport just to stay at the Andaz. Thanks for the tips definitely going to make it at some point.

Any must do’s, recommended tours in the La fortuna/ arenal area? I figure my three days on papagayo will be mostly relaxing. Any best hikes y’all have done?

Stay at Nayara. Best resort in Central America.
Sky trek zip lining and puretrek canyoning are the must dos. Also some good white water rafting.
Great thing about these activities is you can do them in the morning, then have a massage or hang by the pool in the afternoon.

We stayed there a few years ago for a wedding. The place was pretty cool but definitely had that American Country Club vibe to it. The resort has fishing trips and scuba/ snorkeling trips. We went on the scuba/ snorkeling trip. The water is a different blue than what I've seen any where in the GOM. The boat ride around the bay is gorgeous.

Definitely interested in that snorkeling excursion Farva… do you remember the name of the charter/company that took y’all out?

I've stayed at the Andez a couple times. Great resort, great food.
They french presses coffee in the morning is phenomenal.
I'd recommend the sunset boat ride out to monkey head islands.
I'd you like to play golf the Four Seaaons has a course that is awesome to play.
Enjoy the view and the monkeys.

We either told the front desk or the guys that were working down on the beach. They told us to meet them the following on the beach. This is all on the resort property. The first scuba/snorkeling stop was at Monkey's Head. Then they brought us closer to shore over some reefs. We swam to shore and went for a very short hike. My fiance wasn't able to do any of this because she was getting ready with the bride. She still gives me shite

Hahaha I may try your same tactic and talk with the beach crew.

The Arenal Observatory has awesome, easy-to-medium effort hikes and the best view of the volcano. Like everyone else said hot springs and ziplines are great. While we haven't done either yet some people really like the coffee tours and the coffee and chocolate plantation tours.
Also rain forest aren't too far away and could be done as a day trip.
