Any rules I would be breaking if I took a rifle out in the swamp and shot them indiscriminately? Could I use a 223?

depends on if it’s public or private land and if duck/goose season is open

Recently that popped up on my youtube suggestions. I think it was Falling Tide TV and they were in an airboat popping them with AR's but they were originally trying to hog hunt for that video. This was on private land (I think). South La baws here should def be able to tell you.

Pretty sure you have to recover the body due to the lead.

very good eating, the nutria is an herbivore. I've had it smothered in a brown gravy.
When cleaned, looks like a large swamp rabbit.

go to the louisiana regulation pdf and search "nutria". they have a recreational season on public land, not sure what they have on private. on public you can shoot them with non toxic shot from a shot gun or rimfire. shotgun only if there's an open waterfowl season on the public land that you're on.

This baw told his wife he made chicken stew and fed it to her then told her to get her reaction. He was saying something about it you get the trappers license you can get the bounty on each by sending in the tail ($6 a tail).

Nuisance animals, wild hogs and nutria, should be shot on sight with an adequate caliber firearm. Regardless of the season.

ETA: GD autocorrect.

Yes. They are very good to eat with good tasting meat, and a lot of it per animal to be fair.

I've made gumbo's with it over the years and sometimes not tell the folks what they are eating until after they clean their bowls and go back for more.

Some are surprised how good it tastes and some are put off that I got one over on them, but they too ate their share and more to be honest.

I presume a head shot is ideal?

Remember a .223 in the marsh will ricochet off of water and travel a long way.

I had a guy whizz some lead by my son and I fishing one day

Just something to remember, no trees to stop the projectile

I would suggest a shotgun with #4's or .22 and make sure you have a good safe shot. It's hard to see someone sitting down in the boat around the next bend.

.22 is the best/safest way to go.

A shotgun is much safer than a .22

That's how I've killed them in the past. They are pretty easy to hit with a .22 and even more so with a shotgun when heading back from duck hunting and taking a couple of them home to cook.

Most of the shot goes in the head since they are swimming when I have shot them and targeted the head when we ran up on them.

Well, no shite Sherlock. I doubt any nutria I've killed was farther than 20 yards away, if that far.

IF you have people with you and you are driving the boat in the canals you can just watch them and pop them with a shotgun. That Falling Tide video got a lot of flack in the comments about not using shotguns but they were originally out there to hog hunt or something.

Why would you be shooting a nutria rat at 100 yards lol? These kids smashed them with shotguns just cruising around.
