My issue with the Rooney Rule

"The interview process was a sham because they already knew who they wanted in the first place"
Well, they are just following the rule that is in place.
If a team has their eyes set on a certain person, they have every right to hire him and him only and not even consider anyone else.
Why are folks acting as if this something new? Companies do it all the time. They interview candidates to fulfill a quota knowing full well whom they are going to select for the position. This is no different.

The idea is that if you are forced to interview a minority, you might end up liking them.
That's just not how reality works, though. Few people will ever like a candidate they are forced to interview

It’s like being on a date with a girl, and she’s thinking about some other dude. It’s best to move on instead of getting angry.

The other part of this process is that it gives all these minority candidates face time to network with teams and work on their interview skills.
Of course, this is a double edged sword because someone completely out of their fricking depth can blow any chance if they do badly enough.
IIRC, there was a former DC for Virginia Tech who did an interview with some school for a head coaching position and did so bad he pretty much became a meme for schools talking about shite candidates. Believe he was white, though, so no one cared he was no longer getting interviews.

Name a persona with a professional job that did not take an interview where they felt the interviewers were not all that interested and had likely already decided on another person.
This is astonishingly pathetic, and for a football coach it's down right humiliating.

This is such a simple minded idea

Exactly, they already know most of the people who they are going to interview, one way or another. The coaching ranks are a small fraternity.
It's also completely absurd that these people automatically assume that being a good football player has any translation to being a good coach. There are people everywhere who are good at their job, but would not be good at managing people who do their job.

I thought the whole point of the rooney rule was to help the minority coaches get a foot in the door. Giving them experience with the interview process, getting their names out there in the coaching searches, etc.
From that standpoint it has worked really well. In terms of having minority candidates hired..., well no, it hasn't really helped with that at all since their were 3 black coaches in 2003 before the Rooney rule and there are 3 black coaches now.
